We are seeking a Senior Java Developer (Freelance) for a 10-month project in Mechelen. Join us and our client in shaping a digital solution that will have a lasting impact on public health and sustainability.

Our client is on a mission to make the region asbestos-free by 2040. As a Senior Java Developer, you will be instrumental in building a robust web application to collect, manage, and make accessible all asbestos certificates for buildings. Your work will directly support a safer, healthier environment and drive digital transformation in the public sector.
What You'll Be Doing
Lead the design, development, and deployment of Java-based applications for a high-impact public sector project
Coach and mentor a team of developers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance environment
Drive Agile development practices, taking a leadership role in sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
Deliver clean, testable, and scalable code using Java/J2EE, Spring Boot, and related technologies
Ensure seamless integration with databases (DB2 or Postgres) and external APIs
Implement and maintain continuous integration pipelines
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the application meets business and technical requirements
Champion best practices in test-driven development and debugging
Utilize Atlassian tools for project tracking and documentation
Contribute to the evolution of a digital platform that will serve thousands of users and stakeholders
What We're Looking For
Minimum 5 years of demonstrable experience developing Java-based applications
Proven experience leading development teams and coaching developers
Strong expertise in Java/J2EE, Spring Boot, and RESTful services
Hands-on experience with DB2 or Postgres databases
Solid background in continuous integration and test-driven development
Experience with Agile methodologies, ideally in a leadership capacity
Familiarity with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, etc.)
Experience with Kubernetes and React is highly valued
Proven ability to deliver high-quality code: coding, testing, debugging, and API integration
Experience working within the public sector, especially with government projects, is a plus
Ownership mindset, problem-solving drive, and a passion for building solutions that matter
Language Proficiency
Fluency in Dutch at European CEFR level C2 is required
