WHO WE ARE
Doctors of the World is part of the international Médecins du Monde network. As an independent medical NGO, we advocate both in Belgium and abroad for the universal right to health for all, with a primary focus on caring for vulnerable groups who are excluded from mainstream healthcare. In addition to providing care, we actively work to remove financial, cultural, and geographical barriers that prevent people from accessing the care they need.
Both in Belgium and around the world, we provide care to people who would otherwise have no access to it. We do this on five fronts: people on the margins of society (undocumented migrants, people experiencing homelessness, drug users, and sex workers), children in vulnerable situations, women (in their fight for self-determination, equality, and against sexual violence), people on the move or fleeing their homes, and victims of humanitarian crises and armed conflicts.
Three pillars form the foundation of our missions:
* Care: We provide care to people who would otherwise have no access to it.
* Change: We not only help people improve their circumstances, but also support them in achieving sustainable, long-term change in their living conditions.
* Testimony: We do not remain silent. Our experience and presence in the field give us a unique position to expose violations of human dignity with facts, figures, and stories. In this way, we urge local, regional, and (inter)national actors to take responsibility.
These five essential values are the backbone of our work and missions: social justice, commitment, empowerment, balance, and independence.
CONTEXT
The Reception, Care, and Orientation Center (CASO) welcomes, treats, and guides patients towards the mainstream healthcare system. Our patients are primarily individuals with a precarious or uncertain residency status, holders of a visa without means of subsistence, and so on.
CASO is a secondary care service within the Doctors of the World projects in Brussels. The center offers social, medical, and mental health consultations (psychological and psychiatric). The role of psychologists and psychiatrists is to stabilize people before potentially referring them to a mental health service or another relevant outpatient service.
THE ESSENTIALS
As part of this project, Doctors of the World Belgium is currently seeking psychiatrists to provide psychiatric consultations in order to improve access to care for people in precarious situations in Belgium.
If the patient's situation requires it, you may also be asked to prepare medical reports or other relevant certificates to support a possible regularization procedure.
If you are able to regularly dedicate a few hours per month to help people in severe vulnerability, we invite you to join our team of volunteers.
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Conduct psychiatric consultations for patients referred by a psychologist or physician, or for patients who request them directly;
* Prescribe medication;
* Support the team in the event of an application for observation;
* Prepare referral letters or certificates required by the patient;
* Record consultation data in our software system (EHR/Electronic Patient Record);
* Coordinate with other team members as needed and provide advice on specific medical cases;
* Participate in briefings and debriefings;
YOUR PROFILE
* Education: Psychiatrist, registered with the Belgian Medical Council and holder of a RIZIV/INAMI number
* Language skills: French/Dutch/English. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.
* Desired qualities:
o Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
o Strong interpersonal skills
o Excellent listening skills
o Dynamic and proactive
AVAILABILITY: One to two times per month.
