Internship & master's Thesis – Remote Control of Industrial HMI User Interface

Context
We offer to our customers a solution for the remote control of industrial HMI user interfaces via our cloud platform, Talk2M, using protocols such as VNC and RDP. This solution relies on several technologies, including:
* OpenVPN for managing connectivity between the device and the user, a function handled by our cloud platform.
* Apache Guacamole, which supports the integration of VNC and RDP protocols into our cloud solution. Apache Guacamole has been significantly customized to meet our specific needs.
* HTTP (HTML, JavaScript, etc.), which enables users to control the user interface directly within a web browser.
This solution was initially designed and implemented 10 years ago.
Since then, Apache Guacamole has undergone major evolutions in terms of features and internal architecture. Consequently, migrating our solution to more recent technologies is very complex due to the extensive customization. This complexity prevents us from leveraging new features and potentially simpler implementations, as some of our customizations might now be obsolete thanks to these advancements in Apache Guacamole. Furthermore, this substantial technical debt could introduce security vulnerabilities and complicate solution maintenance.
We are currently developing a second cloud platform, Ewon Cloud, which will require a similar remote HMI access feature.
Your mission as an intern
You will play a key role in defining and implementing the next-generation solution for remote access to industrial HMIs user interface within our cloud platforms.
This involves a comprehensive evaluation of existing technologies and the development of a strategy for both our new Ewon Cloud platform and the evolution of our current Talk2M solution.
You will be involved in:
* Investigating and comparing potential solutions for providing users with remote control of HMI user interfaces, including, but not limited to, Apache Guacamole and alternative technologies.
* Conducting proof-of-concept (POC) implementations to validate the feasibility and performance of selected solutions.
* Contributing to the implementation of the chosen solution. The specific development tasks will be defined based on the student's skills and the project timeline.
Master's Thesis Project
This internship is ideally suited for a Master's thesis project. The core mission, centered on the analysis, selection, and implementation of a remote HMI access solution, offers a strong foundation for in-depth research and a substantial thesis. The project will require:
* A detailed study of the current state of the art in remote HMI access technologies.
* A comparative analysis of different solutions, considering factors such as performance, security, maintainability, and scalability.
* The design and execution of POCs to demonstrate the viability of potential solutions in real-world scenarios.
* Documentation of the research process, findings, and recommendations.
* Contribution to the implementation phase, which may involve software development and integration tasks.
Desired Profile
We are seeking a Master's level student in Engineering with a specialization in:
* Computer Science
* Software Engineering
* Network Engineering
The ideal candidate will have:
* A strong interest in web technologies, networking, and remote access solutions.
* Familiarity with web technologies (JavaScript, HTML) and network protocols (VNC, RDP).
* Experience with Apache Guacamole is a plus.
* Knowledge of cloud platforms and architectures is a plus.
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
* The ability to work independently and take initiative.
