We are seeking an experienced Freelance Java Developer to support key digital and regulatory transformation projects within one of Belgium’s leading utilities organisations (energy, grid operations, metering, or market facilitation).
Freelance Java Developer (Utilities Sector)
Duration: 12-month rolling contract (extensions expected)
Start Date: ASAP or within notice
Languages: English (French or Dutch is a plus)
Develop and maintain backend services using Java (Spring/Spring Boot)
Build and secure REST APIs supporting utilities operations
Help modernise legacy platforms into service-oriented/microservices architectures
Ensure performance, reliability, and code quality through testing and reviews
Support CI/CD pipelines and DevOps best practices
Promote clean coding, maintainability, and continuous improvement
4+ years of Java backend development experience
~ Demonstrable tenure within Belgian utilities companies (grid operators, suppliers, water/electricity providers, or market facilitators like Atrias, Fluvius, Sibelga, ORES, Elia)
~ Strong grasp of OOP, SOLID principles, and enterprise development
~ Used to working in Agile teams with cross-functional stakeholders
~ Strong communicator with a quality-first engineering mindset
~ Comfortable with unit testing, code reviews, and clean architecture
Familiarity with CI/CD, DevSecOps, containers, or cloud deployments
