Offer Description About us

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Department of Economics and Management (DEM) is part of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg. It pursues excellence in both fundamental and applied research across economics, business administration, and operations management. The department comprises around 25 professorial staff and serves over 300 students across its bachelor's and master's programmes. DEM hosts a range of study programmes, including the Bachelor in Business Administration, the Master in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well as specialised tracks in finance, logistics, accounting, and quantitative economics. The department is committed to delivering research‑led education and to engaging with societal and economic stakeholders in Luxembourg and beyond.

Embedded within a dynamic and internationally oriented university, the department fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and contributes to Luxembourg's development as a centre for innovation, entrepreneurship, and policy‑relevant research.

Your role

The professor is expected to develop and pursue an independent research agenda in the fields of entrepreneurship and digital technologies, with a particular focus on quantitative methods. They will:

Produce high‑quality research suitable for publication in leading international journals

Seek external research funding and actively contribute to collaborative projects within and beyond the department

Actively contribute to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including in the Master in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the Bachelor in Business Administration, while also showing openness to teaching business‑related subjects at the bachelor level

Supervise PhD theses and contribute to curriculum development

Engage with academic, institutional, and external stakeholders in Luxembourg and internationally

This position is part of the University of Luxembourg's tenure‑track scheme, which offers the assistant professor the possibility to obtain tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor upon positive evaluation. The evaluation takes place within 48 months of appointment and covers the professor's performance with respect to the above‑listed expectations.

The position is designed to strengthen the department's research profile in the fields of entrepreneurship and digital transformation, support its academic programmes, and contribute to its long‑term development.

The Department of Economics and Management offers exceptional opportunities for the candidate to develop, expand, and shape their academic profile. It fosters a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, providing access to extensive firm‑level datasets, and close ties to regulators and Luxembourg's vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem. The successful candidate will benefit from dedicated support for grant applications, the opportunity to design and teach courses in innovative study programmes and supervise doctoral students, and the possibility to engage with the Department's national and international research networks. Together, these resources and partnerships provide excellent conditions for the professor to advance their research agenda, enhance their international visibility, and contribute to evidence‑based policy and practice in digital entrepreneurship.

Your profile

The ideal candidate explores how emerging digital technologies - such as artificial intelligence, digital platforms and big data - shape entrepreneurial activity, including the creation, development, and scaling of new ventures. Candidates should possess post‑doctoral experience and present a clear and coherent research agenda with strong potential for publication in leading international journals.

A solid foundation in quantitative methods is essential, including in causal inference techniques (e.g., panel data econometrics, difference‑in‑differences, instrumental variables). Familiarity with modern data sources and tools such as large‑scale firm‑level data, text analysis, or computational approaches is desirable.

An interest in topics such as startup dynamics, technology adoption, or the broader implications of digital transformation for entrepreneurship is of particular relevance. While familiarity with entrepreneurial finance is considered an asset, it is not a requirement.

Language requirements

The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person hired on this position must be proficient in English and either French or German. The University encourages its staff to learn the other language and provides access to language courses to this end.
