Purpose
We are seeking an experienced and commercially-minded In-House Counsel to support our operations across the EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions in the surgical ophthalmic space (medical devices). This role will act as a strategic legal advisor to regional business leaders, ensuring compliance with local regulations and supporting commercial initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring regional legal expertise, life sciences legal experience, and a practical approach to balancing legal risk and business objectives in a fast-paced, international environment.
We support flexible working and would consider part-time for the right candidate (ideally a minimum of 4 days/week).
Key Responsibilities
* Regional Legal Support: Provide comprehensive legal support across EMEA and Asia-Pacific on a wide range of matters including commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, employment, data privacy, intellectual property, and dispute resolution.
* External Counsel Management: Instruct and manage external legal counsel across various jurisdictions when specialized expertise or litigation support is required.
* Contract Drafting & Negotiation: Draft, review, and negotiate a broad variety of commercial contracts, including sales/distribution agreements, KOL/consulting agreements, service agreements, licensing, and NDAs.
* Regulatory & Compliance: Monitor and advise on legal and regulatory developments across multiple jurisdictions. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, including anti-bribery/anti-corruption, data privacy, sunshine act, and medical device industry-specific regulations.
* Risk Management: Identify potential legal risks, propose practical solutions, and implement mitigation strategies to support business objectives while maintaining compliance.
* Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with business teams including Sales, HR, Finance, Operations, and Trade Compliance to provide timely legal advice and training.
Qualifications
* Law Degree and admission to practice in at least one jurisdiction within EMEA - ideally Belgium or France.
* 3+ years of post-qualification experience as outside counsel, ideally with in-house experience.
* Regional Experience: Demonstrated experience managing legal matters across diverse legal systems in EMEA.
* Industry expertise: Demonstrated experience in life sciences, preferably in medical devices.
* Strong Commercial Acumen: Ability to interpret and apply legal principles in a pragmatic, business-friendly manner.
* Multilingual skills: English and French mandatory, Dutch preferred, Spanish or Italian is a plus.
* High ethical standards and sound judgment.
