Head of EU Affairs APEAL
About APEAL: APEAL, the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging, is a federation of the five major producers of steel for packaging. In total, these five companies employ over 200,000 workers in Europe. Founded in 1986, APEAL represents today about more than 95% of the total European production of steel for packaging.
APEAL is actively engaged in EU policy related to steel packaging, waste, recycling, and recovery. It monitors technical development to ensure that the industry remains compliant with EU rules. APEAL aims to promote the environmental, social, and economic benefits of steel for packaging.
Role & Requirements
APEAL is looking for a new Head of EU Affairs responsible for the Public Affairs activities within the association. This role has one direct report and works closely with the Secretary General in the elaboration and execution of advocacy programmes. The successful candidate will have between 7 to 10 years’ experience in European affairs, preferably with some expertise in Circularity, Green Deal, Recycling, Packaging, and waste topics.
* Lead the Public Affairs Working Group
* Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in European institutions and position APEAL as a trusted stakeholder
* Develop strong and relevant position papers and messaging on behalf of APEAL members on their priority topics
* Develop and strengthen alliances with relevant industry stakeholders and others to reinforce APEAL’s positions
* Be the voice of APEAL in policy forums, promoting the association’s positions, and improving its visibility and credibility among policy makers
* Provide up-to-date information about the political landscape as it impacts APEAL members and the steel packaging sector and analyse and assess EU initiatives of relevance to the sector
* Develop and execute advocacy strategies and action plans to engage the organisation in EU legislative proposals and policies
* Be a point of contact for APEAL members and help guide members towards commonly agreed objectives and positions
* Manage and initiate APEAL working groups and contribute to the smooth operations of the Secretariat office
Profile
* 7 – 10 years’ experience in European Affairs
* Experience in the EU institutions is desirable
* University degree in European studies, Economics, Law, Political Science
* Solid understanding of the functioning of European Union policymaking process
* Fluency in English (written and spoken). Any additional EU language will be an asset
* Good understanding of the European Green Deal: EU packaging and waste regulation
* Strong networker
* Proven ability to work in a team and to manage projects
* Pro-active ‘hands-on’ professional with an ability to juggle multiple tasks
* The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and have an ability to draft articles, reports or position papers
* Autonomous, efficient, flexible and team player with good interpersonal skills
* Willingness to travel within Europe
