Our client is a leading European research and development center focused on silicon photonics and next-generation optoelectronic technologies. Positioned at the forefront of innovation, the center plays a pivotal role in advancing integrated photonic circuits (PICs) and their applications in cutting-edge fields such as high-speed transceivers, AI photonics, and advanced sensing systems.
As a Photonics Design Expert, you will lead the design, modeling, and development of advanced photonic components and circuits, driving innovation from concept to product launch.
Responsibilities
* Design and model photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and components, ensuring compliance with defined specifications and performance targets.
* Lead new concept studies and product development initiatives, from the R&D stage through New Product Introduction (NPI).
* Define test plans, analyze experimental data, and ensure design validation during the R&D phase.
* Contribute to the development of PIC-based system architectures for emerging applications (e.g., 6G photonics, optical DSP, RF/mmWave photonics, photonic neural networks, and 3D/4D image sensing).
* Work closely with processing and test teams, as well as global component and module engineering groups, to ensure seamless integration and product realization.
* Conduct literature reviews, monitor industry trends, and participate in conferences to generate new ideas and strengthen R&D strategies.
* Secure funding and resources for R&D projects by effectively communicating value propositions to internal and external stakeholders.
Requirements
* PhD in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with 5+ years of relevant experience in the photonics industry.
* Proven track record in the design and testing of silicon photonics and III-V components.
* Experience in integrating PICs with EICs, RF ICs, and driving circuitry in transceiver modules or similar subsystems.
* Demonstrated expertise in managing projects or products from concept to market introduction.
* Hands-on experience with photonic modeling tools (e.g., Photon Design, Lumerical, COMSOL, CST).
* Familiarity with layout tools such as Tanner L-Edit and Luceda IPKISS (experience with IPKISS is a plus).
* Knowledge of VPI software and Python scripting is advantageous.
* Deep knowledge of integrated optics and optoelectronic systems.
* Strong problem-solving skills and a creative, customer-centric mindset.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Dutch or Chinese is a plus).
* Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
