We are seeking a Lab Software Engineering Manager, to lead our team of embedded R&D lab software engineering experts to drive the development and delivery of cutting-edge software solutions that transform Sanofi’s laboratory and CMC manufacturing plant operations
As a Lab Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of talented software engineers building solutions that power our global R&D laboratories. This team are on the ground, co-located with lab scientists and plant operators because they understand not only the scientific applications but also the scientific workflows in which they are used. You'll combine technical expertise with strong leadership skills to deliver scalable solutions that enable scientific innovation at scale. Leading a global team of approximately 12 software engineers, based in Europe and North America.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership, People Leadership, Team Development & Delivery
1. Drive technical excellence through, and the establishment of engineering best practices
2. Make critical technology decisions regarding, frameworks, tools patterns
3. Partner with Tech Lead to ensure software quality, performance, security, and compliance industry regulations (GxP, data integrity, etc.)
4. Champion DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code approaches
5. Manage and develop engineering team of 12-14 software engineers, providing coaching
6. Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and goal-setting sessions
7. Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, continuous learning, and psychological safety
8. Build diverse, inclusive teams that reflect our commitment to equity and belonging
9. Contribute to product strategy and roadmap planning with feasibility assessments
10. Manage technical dependencies and risks
Digital Transformation & Innovation
11. Drive the digital transformation of laboratory operations through modern software engineering practices
12. Identify opportunities to use modern technologies (AI/ML, automation, cloud computing, IoT) to solve scientific challenges
13. Champion user-centered design principles and ensure solutions meet the needs of scientists and lab personnel
14. Stay current with industry trends in scientific software, lab automation, and R&D informatics
15. Contribute to Sanofi's broader Digital R&D Strategy
16. Ensure proper documentation, knowledge sharing, and sustainability
Education
17. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field
18. Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) preferred but not required with equivalent experience 5+ years in a technical leadership or engineering management role
19. Proven track record of delivering complex software systems in production environments
20. Experience leading and developing high-performing engineering teams
21. Strong background in modern software development practices (agile, DevOps, CI/CD)
22. Background in life sciences, chemistry, biology, or related scientific fields
23. Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), electronic lab notebooks (ELN), or data platforms
24. Understanding of laboratory workflows, scientific instrumentation, and research operations
Soft & Technical Skills
25. **Programming Proficiency in at least two of: Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, Go
26. Web Technologies: Modern web frameworks (React, Angular, Vue.js), RESTful APIs, GraphQL
27. Cloud Platforms: AWS, Azure, or GCP - infrastructure, services, and deployment patterns
28. Databases: SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB) databases
29. DevOps & Tools: Git, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)
30. Architecture: Microservices, API designd systems, event-driven architectures
31. Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain diverse engineering talent
32. Strong coaching and mentoring skills with a track record of growing careers
33. Excellent communication skills - ability to influence without authority
34. Experience managing in matrix organizations and leading through ambiguity
35. Proven ability to balance technical excellence with business acumen
36. Understanding of software regulated industries (pharmaceutical, medical device, or similar)
37. Familiarity with data security, and compliance requirements (GDPR, 21 CFR Part 11)
38. Knowledge of software validation and quality management systems
39. Experience with AI/ML technologies and their application to scientific problems
40. Knowledge of scientific computing, data analysis tools (R, Julia, MATLAB), or bioinformatics platforms
41. Expertise in data engineering, data pipelines, and analytics with scientific data standards (AnIML, SiLA, SDTM, etc.)
Business & Strategic Skills
42. Experience in digital transformation initiatives or modernization programs
43. Track record of building platforms or products from to management principles and user-centered design
44. Experience with vendor management and third-party integrations
45. International or multi-site team leadership experience
Certifications
46. Agile/Scrum certifications (CSM, PSM, SAd platform Architect, Azure Developer, etc.)
47. Project management certifications (PMP, PRINCE2)
