Doctoral scholarship airway epithelium biology in chronic lung disease – University of Antwerp. The Lung research Antwerp group within the Department of Antwerp Surgical Training, Anatomy and Research Centre in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is seeking a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of airway epithelium biology in chronic lung disease.
The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking European university with a large, international staff and student body. The Doctoral scholarship aims to advance understanding of the role of the airway epithelium in the early development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, using a unique collection of human lung explants and matched primary epithelium cells. The position includes training and conducting research using an air-liquid interface cell culture model, with readouts including protein and RNA measurements, RNA and single-cell sequencing, and validation on human lung samples.
Responsibilities
* Actively work on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of airway epithelial biology in chronic lung disease, funded by FWO.
* Harvest, grow, and perform stimulation and inhibition experiments using an innovative air-liquid interface cell culture model.
* Conduct readouts including ELISA, PCR, RNA sequencing, and single-cell sequencing; perform validation experiments on characterized human lung samples.
* Publish scientific articles related to the research project.
Qualifications
* Master's degree in medicine, biomedical sciences, biology, biochemistry, bio-engineering or a similar field, or expect to obtain it by the start date.
* Teaching competences aligned with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
* Demonstrated attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.
* Team player with relevant experience in primary cell culture is advantageous; interest in analyzing sequencing datasets is desirable.

* Doctoral scholarship for 2 years, with potential renewal for another 2 years following positive evaluation.
* Planned start date: 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible after that date.
* Monthly scholarship amount according to doctoral scholarship guidelines.
