What Fern offers

This is an exciting paid opportunity to gain work experience in an international not-for-profit co-managed organisation, learning how to manage finances and donor requirements.

Candidates must be eligible for a Belgian “Convention d’Immersion Professionnelle” contract. We offer €1,082.43 monthly compensation for 6 months, working-from-home (€157.83) and internet (€20) allowances, support with home-office travel costs, a computer and a desk to work from at our Brussels office.

This is a full-time position, but we will also consider candidates who wish to work four days per week. The internship is for six-months, with the possibility to renew the contract for a second six-month period. Interns are asked to work a minimum of one day per week from Fern’s Brussels office. There is potential to travel to Fern’s UK office if required.

Fern will ensure you get an overview of all finance and HR areas. You will also get the opportunity to access mentoring from experienced professionals and receive support to get the most out of your time with us.

How to apply

Please send your application with “FAHRM internship” in the subject line to recruitment@ by 23:59 CET, 10 November 2025.

To be considered, your application should include:

9. Your CV;

10. A short cover email explaining your interest in working with Fern.

11. Completion of a short Excel based assignment

This assignment simulates real work you would perform during the internship for Partner Finances, where careful financial oversight and clear communication with partners are essential.

One of our partners in the Republic of Congo has submitted the attached quarterly financial report covering the period October-December 2022. This report justifies expenses incurred under one of our grants.

Your Task:

Review the financial report for accuracy and completeness. Look for any errors, inconsistencies, or missing information.

Prepare a feedback document containing questions for clarification, issues that need comments and recommendations for the partner.

We want to understand your approach and see your analytical skills in action.

Deliverables:

12. The reviewed financial report (with corrections noted, if applicable)

13. A list of questions, information needed, and feedback to share with the partner

Selection process

Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview on 19 November in Brussels. The desired start date is 5 January 2026.

Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Statement

Fern is committed to advancing Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We believe that diverse voices and perspectives are essential to solving the planet's most pressing environmental problems, and we encourage applications from candidates whose identities have been historically under-represented in the environmental movement. We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, marital status, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship, age or disability.

If you have any reasonable adjustments you need Fern to take into consideration for either the application or the interview process, please get in touch with aislin@.

About Fern

Fern is a non-hierarchical organisation that coordinates networks and works with partners to protect forests and the rights of forest defenders. We believe that to be effective, it is essential to understand and address the social dimension of environmental conflicts; that strong coalitions are more likely to achieve lasting change; and that it is necessary to both highlight problems and present ways forward. We are committed to tackling power injustices and supporting people to improve the wording and implementation of policies that affect them.

We currently have 20 staff working from three offices, in Brussels (Belgium), Paris (France) and Moreton-in-Marsh (United Kingdom). We have no director and strive to make decisions by consensus. We work with partner organisations across Europe, South-East Asia, Central and West Africa and South America. Details of our work areas and campaigns can be found at our website.
