WHO WE ARE
Doctors of the World is part of the international Médecins du Monde network. As an independent medical NGO, we stand up at home and abroad for the universal right to health for all, with the main focus on caring for vulnerable groups who fall out of the mainstream healthcare system. Besides providing care, we also actively work to remove financial, cultural and geographical obstacles that make it difficult for people to get care.
Both in Belgium and in the rest of the world, we provide care to people who would otherwise not have access to it. We do this on five fronts: people on the margins of society (undocumented migrants, the homeless, drug users and sex workers), children in vulnerable situations, women (in their struggle for self-determination, for equality and against sexual violence), people on the move or on the run, and victims of humanitarian crises and armed conflicts.
Three pillars always underlie our missions:
* Care : we provide care to people who would otherwise not have access to it
* Change : we not only help people improve their lot but also guide them to enable sustainable change on their own that has a long-term effect on their living conditions
* Witness : we do not stand by silently. Our experience and presence on the ground give us a unique position to make violations of human dignity public with facts, figures and stories. Thus, we shake up local, regional and (inter)national players to take up their responsibility.
These 5 essential values form the backbone of our operation and missions : social justice, engagement, empowerment, balance, independence.
CONTEXT
In Antwerp, the Center for Reception, Care and Orientation (COZO) is a low-threshold, multidisciplinary center for anyone experiencing problems accessing health care. The COZO team orients people to the regular health care system. When this seems impossible, or in urgent cases, Doctors of the World itself offers medical and psychological consultations.
