As a Clean & Black Utilities Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and implementation of utility systems for a new sterile production facility. You will act as a subject-matter expert on the owner’s side, ensuring that clean and black utility systems meet capacity, quality, and compliance requirements throughout the design phase.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Establishing capacity, redundancy, and distribution concepts for clean utilities (WFI, PW, Clean Steam, Process Air, Nitrogen) and black utilities (boilers, chillers, compressors)
* Performing demand modeling and applying diversity factors across users (formulation, washers, autoclaves, filling, HVAC)
* Defining generation and storage philosophies, including loop temperatures, velocities, and sanitization strategies (thermal/chemical)
* Sizing equipment and contributing to energy and emissions strategies, including heat rejection and noise control
* Specifying instrumentation and monitoring systems (BMS/EMS), quality specifications, and sampling/trending points
* Applying SIP/CIP knowledge for piping and dead-leg management
* Delivering core design documents: utility load lists, PFDs/P&IDs, URS packages, loop layouts, and risk assessments
* Collaborating closely with QA, Validation, HSE, and Operations to ensure GMP Annex 1 readiness and containment strategies.
Skills & Qualifications
* You hold a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Process Engineering
* You have proven experience in designing clean and industrial utilities within sterile pharmaceutical environments
* You are familiar with hygienic closed-loop design and GMP compliance
* You have strong knowledge of utility generation, distribution, and monitoring systems
* You are detail-oriented and capable of producing accurate load profiles and robust redundancy strategies
* You are fluent in both English and French (written and spoken)
* You thrive in cross-functional environments and are comfortable working with engineering partners and internal stakeholders.
