More than a pure technological issue, the sustainable energy transition and the corollary energy storage technologies depend on critical elements. Of particular interest for energy storage, the European Union listed graphite as a critical raw material in 2020 due to its increasing global demand.

Energy storage is at the heart of this sustainable energy transition, and energy storage technologies are required at all time scales: from seconds/minutes to hours/days range using batteries (primarily for mobility), to the hours/days to weeks time scale using thermal and chemical energy storage systems to decarbonize the chemical sectors.

In this multipartner project, alternative sustainable local synthesis route for graphite, and important electrode material, and integrating renewable energy storage for the decarbonization of the chemical industry is targeted.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to conduct advanced research on the characterization of synthetic graphite material for energy storage applications.

This is a position In the Nano(bio)chemistry on Surfaces team of the Division of Molecular Imaging and Photonics of the Department of Chemistry at KU Leuven. Innovative surface functionalization and characterization are central research themes of the team. We act by “Seeing is believing” and therefore, visualisation with (sub)molecular resolution is at the heart of our characterization methodology.
10. A full-time PhD bursary contract for a period of 4 years, with a competitive stipend.
11. Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources.
12. Opportunities for professional development and networking in an international context.
