We are looking for a Space Data Archive Software Engineer to work at ESAC’s premises in Madrid, Spain.
You will have the opportunity to participate in the software engineering service that supports the development and maintenance of the Science Archives at the ESDC (ESAC Science Data Centre) for the space missions of any of the sub-areas: Planetary, Astronomy, Survey, Heliophysics, and Human, Robotics and Exploration.
About the client and location
The European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Villanueva de la Canada, Madrid, Spain. ESAC is responsible for all of ESA’s research into astronomy and solar system exploration, as well as being the location of ESA’s space telescope. It is from here that archives are stored on ESA’s science missions, which are then made accessible for researchers all around the world.
Tasks and activities
The scope of work will include:
* Designing, developing, deploying, operating and maintaining any of the ESDC Science Archives and Virtual Observatory (VO) subsystems:
* Supporting the analysis of user requirements and working on the design and modelling of archive databases and archive data models.
* Archiving applications and data.
* Archiving interoperability systems, or programmatic access, supported by VO standards.
* Archiving administration services (monitoring, statistics, reporting, user management...).
* VO tools and services.
* Integrating in and across all the ESDC archives of common infrastructure, tools and science data visualization, enabling the maximum exploitation of the data.
* Configurating software control activities associated with archive development.
* Contributing to prepare and maintain necessary documentation following engineering standards as ECSS.
* Participating in working groups, workshops, conferences and meetings where science archives and virtual observatory standards and practices are discussed.
* Interacting with general international community of astronomers/scientist/users.
* Connecting with ESA partners (such as Canadian and NASA teams, JAXA).
Skills and experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
* Master’s Degree.
* At least 4 years of relevant work experience.
* Experience in JAVA, Javascript (Angular).
* Experience in Web technologies (http, apache, tomcat, Web services...).
* Experience in relational databases (mainly PostgreSQL and Oracle), DB management software (DB Administration).
* Experience in SQL and XML.
* Experience in Unit, Integration, System and End to End testing (such as Junit, Jasmine, Cucumber, Selenium, Cypress)
* Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
* Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
* Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:
* Experience in Python is an asset.
* Knowledge in Distributed Databases (Greenplum).
* Practical experience in Virtualisation.
* Background in Agile software development and continuous integration.
