I'm looking for a part-time research assistant, who will help me with frontend engineering. The job will commence as soon as possible for 6 months, with possibility of renewal.
The part-time research assistant will help me develop and maintain an application that will run a large-scale online behavioural / psychological experiment. The online study will be sent to millions of people, so a robust, secure platform with smooth UI / UX is required.
Qualifications and requirements:
Applicants should be current undergraduate or master's students in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related discipline to front-end development.
Solid frontend development skills are required, including:
- Proficiency in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript and TypeScript
- Experience with for building interactive UIs
- Familiarity with module federation / micro-frontend architecture or willingness to learn it quickly (guidance will be provided)
- Understanding of responsive design and cross-browser compatibility
- Knowledge of calling APIs and displaying data
Bonus skills:
- Knowledge of backend / full-stack technologies such as Django / Python
- Database MySQL or other relational databases
- AWS (S3, EC2, Lambda) will be a strong plus
Prior internship, research assistantship, or personal project experience in web/app development is highly preferred (please include links to GitHub/portfolio/demo if available). Applicants should demonstrate good coding style and version control habits (Git / GitHub). We value self-motivation, open-mindedness, fast learning, and the ability to follow technical specs.
The appointee will:
- Develop a web-based experiment application used in a large-scale research project.
- Maintain the web-based application and debug during large-scale data collection.
- Collaborate with the PI and student RAs to translate research design into a usable web flow.
- Conduct basic testing, documentation, and UI/UX refinements to ensure reliability for real participants.
About the project and the PI:
On top of financial compensations, previous student RAs in my group have leveraged experiences gained to succeed in interviews and obtain offers from Microsoft, OPPO, Huawei, etc., and research-focused RAs have used the PI's recommendations to secure PhD offers from top universities, such as University of Washington in Seattle. Outstanding performance in this role may lead to a strong recommendation letter from Prof. Dawei Wang.
