Job Description
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and proactive
Process Engineer
to join our
R&D Process Development team.
The ideal candidate will play a key role in advancing innovative biopharmaceutical processes through laboratory-scale experimentation, process optimization, and technical support. This position requires a strong foundation in bioprocessing technologies, a commitment to quality and data integrity, and the ability to collaborate across functions to drive project success.

The Process Engineer will be responsible for conducting experiments, developing and refining laboratory-scale models, ensuring compliance with GxP standards, and contributing to the continuous improvement of R&D operations.

Key Responsibilities

* Process Development & Experimentation
* Design and execute laboratory-scale experiments to develop, optimize, and validate new or existing processes (e.g., ultrafiltration/diafiltration [UF/DF], chromatography, precipitation, filtration).
* Support the creation, refinement, and scale-down modeling of complex process sequences.
* Apply scientific principles and experimental design (e.g., DOE) to improve process efficiency, yield, and product quality.
* Perform routine and non-routine analytical testing in support of process development projects.
* Laboratory Scale Model Support
* Assist in the development, troubleshooting, and optimization of laboratory-scale process models.
* Identify and resolve technical issues related to equipment performance or process variability.
* Contribute to the standardization of lab-scale protocols and workflows.
* Documentation & Reporting
* Author and maintain technical documentation including work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols, and experimental reports.
* Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in laboratory notebooks and electronic systems.
* Support deviation investigations, change control records, and other GxP-related documentation.
* Laboratory Operations & Equipment Management
* Perform routine and preventive maintenance, calibration, and qualification activities for laboratory equipment (e.g., AKTA, NGC systems, centrifuges, refrigeration units).
* Support fridge/freezer qualification and equipment maintenance per annual plans.
* Ensure availability of reagents, consumables, and materials through coordination with lab coordinators.
* Promote and adhere to 5S, safety, and housekeeping standards.
* Data Analysis & Interpretation
* Analyze experimental data using statistical and analytical tools to interpret results and identify trends.
* Identify anomalies, technical issues, or deviations and escalate them appropriately.
* Collaborate with Analytical Development and Process Development teams to resolve data-related challenges.
* Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Work closely with teams in R&D, Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), and Manufacturing to ensure alignment on timelines, deliverables, and technical requirements.
* Participate in project meetings, technical reviews, and process transfer activities.
* Act as a technical resource and mentor for junior team members.
* Training & Continuous Improvement
* Provide hands-on training on equipment and processes to team members.
* Promote best practices in GxP compliance, safety, and data integrity.
* Stay current with industry advancements in bioprocessing and regulatory expectations.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education

* Master's degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
* Alternatively: Bachelor's degree with a proven track record in process development and optimization within a pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment.

Experience

* 4+ years of relevant experience in process development, scale-up, or laboratory operations within a biopharmaceutical or biotech setting.
* Demonstrated experience in hands-on laboratory experimentation and process optimization.

Technical Skills & Knowledge

* Proficiency in key process technologies:

* Ultrafiltration/Diafiltration (UF/DF)

* Chromatography (e.g., AKTA, NGC systems)
* Filtration (depth, membrane, sterile)

* Familiarity with analytical techniques: HPLC, ELISA, UV-Vis, Capillary Electrophoresis (CE), SDS-PAGE

* Experience with laboratory equipment maintenance, calibration, and qualification
* Strong understanding of GxP principles (GMP, GLP, ALCOA+ data integrity)
* Ability to write and review SOPs, protocols, and technical reports
* Proficiency in MS Office and relevant data analysis software

Languages

* Fluent in English (required)
* Proficiency in French and/or Dutch is an asset (depending on regional operations)
