Banking and Finance Lawyer (German speaker preferred) – based in Luxembourg Position at EIB's Legal Directorate (JU) - EU Operations Department - OPS-EU – Northern Europe Division, according to internal benchmark Officer Legal Services. Full‑time, grade 5, permanent contract. Requires regular office presence at the Luxembourg headquarters and relocation support.
Purpose The Northern Europe Division (NE) provides legal support for projects across Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and the EFTA countries. In this role you will assist the Head of Division and Head of Unit, working on lending and financing operations primarily in Austria and Germany.
Responsibilities
Draft and negotiate legal documentation for lending and financing operations, including bilateral loans with banking counterparts, public entities and major corporates.
Draft and negotiate project finance, structured finance (e.g. securitisations) and other financing arrangements, including risk‑sharing structures.
Provide legal advisory support, conclude contracts, complete related formalities and monitor legal events such as loan restructuring.
Manage contacts and negotiations; prepare terms of reference for external counsel and supervise their work.
Complete administrative formalities and conduct legal research on issues arising from EIB operations.
Develop and maintain relationships with EIB, clients and external advisers, representing EIB externally.
Qualifications
University degree in law (Bachelor or Master), preferably qualified in German or Austrian law.
Minimum 5 years, preferably not more than 15 years of professional experience in bank lending, project finance or capital markets, preferably in an internationally reputed law firm or in‑house legal department of a financial institution.
Knowledge of civil and commercial law relevant to the division’s jurisdiction.
Significant experience drafting and negotiating finance documents in English; experience in German is an advantage.
Experience in structured finance and/or project finance/PPP transactions.
Very good knowledge of standard computer tools.
Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (level 5 CEFRL); strong command of German is a distinct advantage.
