At Barco IX (Immersive Experiences business unit) we have a heart for technology and a spirit for creativity. We immerse our audience in experiences they will never forget. The markets for our technologies range from live events, over theme parks and museums to flight simulators. Our IX R&D organization focusses on developing projection and image processing technologies to make these immersive experiences come to life for our customers all over the world. From inspiring people at the Gent Light Festival, through bringing digital art to galleries and museums worldwide, to providing visuals at world’s leading concert stages, your work will make it happen!

The function

Barco is seeking a Senior Engineer Mechanics for its Immersive eXperiences Business unit in Kortrijk.

If you're passionate about applying your mechanical engineering expertise to high-end solid-state illumination products (laser, LED, phosphor) that set industry standards in projection technology, then this position is perfect for you.

You'll join an international team of enthusiastic developers from Belgium, Norway, China, and USA.

Key responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of precision opto-mechanical assemblies for advanced light pipes and light sources, where mechanical tolerances are critical to optical performance.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with optical and mechanical engineers during concept and design phases and work hand-in-hand with manufacturing and operations teams to deliver robust, cost-effective, and scalable solutions for 1- and 3-chip DLP projection systems utilizing laser, LED, and laser-phosphor illumination technologies.

In this role, you will:

1. Design and develop high-precision opto-mechanical assemblies for DLP projection systems, including alignment-sensitive components.
2. Translate optical concepts into manufacturable mechanical designs in close collaboration with optical engineering.
3. Define and control mechanical tolerances to ensure optical accuracy, thermal stability, and long-term reliability.
4. Design small electro-mechanical components such as lens-holder motorization or iris mechanisms, which are integral to the opto-mechanical features of a projector.
5. Clamp optical components using spring-based mechanisms and calculate optimal spring characteristics to ensure secure and precise positioning of lenses and mirrors.
6. Support prototyping, industrialization, and high-volume production in partnership with our industrialization and manufacturing teams.
7. Drive DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing/Assembly) practices and continuous improvement initiatives. Create and manage detailed mechanical designs, drawings, and BOMs using Creo and Windchill.
8. Interface with ERP systems for lifecycle management, configuration control, and production readiness.
9. Engage with suppliers for component selection, qualification, and technical support.
10. Participate in design reviews, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
11. Provide maintenance, support, and continuous improvement for existing products.

Profile

12. Master's degree in mechanical or electro-mechanical engineering.
13. Minimum of 2 - 5 years of engineering experience in a design environment or equivalent.
14. Experience in opto-mechanical design for projection systems, imaging devices, or optical products.
15. Hands-on experience integrating laser, LED, and laser-phosphor light sources.
16. Proficiency in Creo for 3D modelling and detailed mechanical drawings.
17. Experience with Windchill for product data and lifecycle management.
18. Familiarity with ERP systems and their role in engineering/manufacturing workflows.
19. Solid understanding of mechanical tolerancing, thermal management, and alignment-critical designs.
20. Experience in spring calculation and clamping optical parts such as lens elements and mirrors.
21. Experience with small moving mechanical components (mechanical or electronically actuated).
22. Experience in key manufacturing processes, including: Die casting Machining Spring characterization
23. Ability to run simulations in Pro/ENGINEER and interpret test data (mechanical, thermal, etc…).
24. Strong oral and written communication skills in English and/or Dutch.

Soft Skills

25. Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
26. A good team player and able to work in a multidisciplinary team.
27. Proactive, result-driven, and innovative thinker with analytical skills.
28. Detail-oriented, quality-conscious, and cost-aware.
29. Willing to travel occasionally to Barco locations, suppliers, or customers worldwide.
