🌐 Context & Role
We are looking for a Senior Functional Designer to join the IS Life domain of a major player in the Belgian insurance sector. You will work within a large-scale IT environment (1,000+ IT professionals) supporting the Life Insurance business, covering contract subscription, contract management, tariffs, funds, reserves, and financial flows (premiums, claims, settlements).
You will act as a hands-on functional analyst, translating high-level business requirements into robust and scalable IT solutions. You will collaborate closely with Business stakeholders, Project Managers, technical teams, and testing teams, while working autonomously on up to three projects simultaneously.
The technical landscape includes COBOL Micro Focus, SQL databases, and interactions with front-end, printing, and communication systems.
🎯 Key Responsibilities
* Translate business requirements into structured functional and IT solutions
* Contribute to technical design in close collaboration with developers
* Design solutions covering UI, business logic, and database architecture
* Prepare and execute functional and integration test cases
* Validate solutions prior to delivery and analyze corrective actions
* Coordinate with technical designers and programmers during implementation
* Support Project Managers with scope definition, milestones, and delivery follow-up
* Act as a key link between Business and IT to ensure solutions fully meet user needs
* Review source code and generate SQL queries when needed
🧠 Required Experience & Skills
Functional & Business Experience
* Master’s or Engineering degree in IT or a scientific field with strong IT focus or Bachelor’s degree with minimum 5 years of relevant experience
* Functional analysis and solution design on large-scale IT projects
* Experience as a Lead Functional Analyst
* Strong background in insurance or banking (Life Insurance is a plus)
Technical Skills
* Strong understanding of COBOL Micro Focus and SQL Server
* Experience with administrative/back-end systems
* Ability to interact effectively with technical teams
* Proficient with MS Office
* Ability to read and analyze source code
Nice to Have
* Web-based client/server systems with MF back-end
* Batch processing experience
* COBOL / SQL development experience
* .NET knowledge
* Agile and Waterfall methodologies
* Architectural design experience
