Job Title: Director of Health and Safety

Department: Human Resources (HR)
Reports to: Sr. Vice President of HR
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

Develop, implement, and manage GWH’s Safety Program. This includes developing, updating and maintaining effective safety program content to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety and health regulations. Lead safety training meetings, target trends and lead root cause analysis discussions. Develop and implement policies related to the safety of GWH’s associates, customers, and assets.

Major responsibilities are to identify and evaluate opportunities and best practices, along with compliance parameters, and work closely with Risk Management to develop and implement strategies to minimize exposure to loss.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Translate corporate health & safety vision into a multi-year roadmap with annual goals, budget, and KPIs.
* Drive a zero-incident culture with high standards of accountability.
* Establish and lead robust health and safety programs tailored to automotive retail operations.
* Lead Regional Safety Managers to drive location safety compliance; lead the Health & Safety annual budget.
* Emergency Preparedness – Key contributor to crisis‑management plans and business‑continuity drills.
* Ensure implementation and execution of GWH’s Safety Program to ensure compliance with all Federal, State, Local, CARF, Health and Safety Regulations.
* Manages and conducts site visits to ensure compliance with risk management, safety, and training strategies through audit and/or inspection and communicates findings to respective leadership.
* Manages and assists with internal audit processes and procedures to ensure processes such as inspections, data analysis, support, and partnership are completed to reduce overall risk/loss.


Additional Responsibilities

* Develops, plans, and presents safety-related training for the enterprise. Monitors associate activity to gauge the effectiveness of training.
* Develop training for associates on first aid, lockout/tagout, emergency evacuation, fire extinguisher use, proper lifting techniques, and overall injury protection.
* Responsible for minimizing OSHA recordable incidents at all locations and meeting safety goals.


Key Performance Indicators (KPI)

* Workers’ compensation expense and mod factor.
* Training/Certification completion and compliance.
* OSHA, Physical Security, HCP and CARF Compliance
* Quality of investigation and partnership with HR and Operations (corrective action records managed mostly independently, measured by feedback from team leaders).
* Integrity, timeliness, and quality of Safety Program Reporting


Minimum Qualifications

* A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree is preferred.
* Ten (10) years of progressive Safety leadership; 5+ years of multi-unit Safety operations experience.
* Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification strongly preferred; OSHA 30‑Hour minimum is required.
* Proven success lowering TRIR/LTIR and driving cultural transformation.
* Expert knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910/1926, RCRA, EPCRA, DOT Haz‑mat rules, and state equivalents.


Physical Requirements / Work Environment

* Ability to sit, stand, bend, and reach.
* Ability to lift, push, pull, up to, 25 lbs.
