2 - Position and Research Focus
The Faculty of Engineering, Department of Toegepaste mechanica, seeks a PhD student with a doctoral grant.
The research involves developing graph-based machine learning surrogates of wind energy systems to enhance wind turbine fatigue load estimation, integrating structural health information into wind farm asset management, and optimizing structural lifetime and power production.
The project combines wind energy and machine learning, focusing on physics-based simulation acceleration using graph neural networks. The candidate will validate and improve surrogate models, explore transfer learning, and work closely with supervisors Prof. Christof Devriendt and Dr. Francisco de Nolasco, within a vibrant research group involved in structural health monitoring and wind energy projects.
3 - Profile
Required qualifications include:
* Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., mechanical/electrical/civil engineering, energy, computer science)
* Motivation for high-level scientific research
* Analytical, technical, and programming skills (Python advantageous)
* Interest in mechanical behavior, monitoring, offshore wind energy
* Knowledge of graph neural networks is highly regarded
* Ability to work independently, creatively solve problems, and communicate effectively in English
