Job description
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Automation Engineer to serve as the onsite specialist for a state-of-the-art European Distribution Centre hub, supporting one of the world’s leading healthcare organizations.
In this key role, you will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of advanced automation solutions within a highly automated environment for medical device logistics. You will play a critical part in ensuring operational continuity, optimizing performance, and driving innovation through cutting-edge technologies such as AI/ML, AMR/AGV systems, machine vision, and IoT architectures.
This is an excellent opportunity to work at the forefront of Industry 4.0 in a regulated, high-precision environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead planned maintenance, system upgrades, and deployments during weekend windows to ensure zero impact on daily operations.
* Support end-to-end automation project execution — from design and integration to go-live and operational stabilization — in collaboration with engineering and cross-functional teams.
* Maintain and enhance Warehouse Control Systems (WCS), including troubleshooting, technical escalations, and implementing long-term fixes with vendors and integrators.
* Drive the introduction and integration of emerging automation technologies, including:
o AI/ML-driven process automation
o Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)
o Machine vision and inspection systems
o Cyber-physical systems and Industrial IoT (IIoT) platforms
* Ensure all automation initiatives comply with cybersecurity, data privacy, and safety standards (including SOX, ISRM, and GMP requirements).
* Collaborate with central technology teams to align WCS needs with enterprise infrastructure (network, servers, data layer, cybersecurity).
* Stay current with Industry 4.0 trends and continuously improve the automation roadmap using best practices in smart manufacturing and digital twin technologies.
Profile Requirements
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Automation, IT, or a related technical field.
* Minimum of 4 years of experience in automation engineering, industrial digitalization, or robotics within manufacturing or distribution environments.
* Solid understanding of:
o PLCs, HMI, SCADA, OEE monitoring
o Warehouse Control Systems (WCS) and controls architecture
o Industrial robotics, vision systems, and sensor networks
* Hands-on experience with:
o Programming languages: Python, Java, C++ (preferred)
o IoT platforms and edge computing
o Data analytics for industrial performance optimization
* Proven experience in Computer System Validation (CSV) and SDLC processes, including:
o Writing and executing IQ/OQ/PQ protocols
o Engineering change control, test documentation, and report generation
o Working with .NET, ASP, Windows applications or Java-based equivalents
Preferred Qualifications
* Master’s degree in Engineering, Automation, or related discipline.
* Experience in GMP-regulated or medical device environments.
* Familiarity with Rockwell PLCs, industrial robots (e.g., Fanuc, ABB), and industrial data centers.
* Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent process improvement certification.
Language & Work Arrangement
* Fluency in English and French required (Knowledge of Dutch is a plus)
* Onsite presence mandatory; remote work allowed up to 40% based on operational needs
