CONTEXT
In the framework of the current projects of the research unit VIPER, we are looking for a full-time researcher in applied sleep research with a Master’s degree in neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, or applied research psychology; and a PhD in either Medicine, Neuroscience, or Exercise science.
The Royal Military Academy is fully recognized as a university, fulfilling the same criteria as civilian universities. The RMA is also conducting scientific research at university level for projects funded by the Belgian Defense department or external sources.

PROJECT
You work within the research unit VIPER, at the Department LIFE of the Faculty of Social and Military Sciences of the RMA and in close collaboration with the Sleep Health and Human Performance Lab of the Université de Montréal. You conduct scientific research at university level regarding sleep and performance in operational conditions.
MAIN TASKS
* Field data collection, which may impose rustic living conditions and travel abroad
* Data analysis and interpretation
* Writing of scientific papers
* Project management.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Degree(s) required / ideal degree(s): MSC in neuropsychology and cognitive psychology or applied research psychology; PhD in either Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Neurosciences or Exercise sciences.
This position is open for junior profiles (0-3 years of experience).
“MUST HAVE” skills:
* Experience in applied neurophysiology: sleep or wake EEG recordings and analysis.
* Experience in applied multidisciplinary psychophysiological field research.
* Good track record in scientific publications, indicating mastery of scientific writing.
* International experience.
* Outdoor experience and a physical fitness level allowing for field measurements in rustic environments (sleeping tents, carrying a backpack).
* Experience with research in military environments/populations
* Training or experience in sleep research
* Track record of successful grant writing.

* The applicant shall have a proficient level in both oral and written English and either French or Dutch.
* Minimum knowledge of Dutch or French as a third language is an added value for collaboration with peers.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
* The researcher may be exposed to classified information and will therefore have to obtain the required security clearance. The candidate must consent with the background check required to obtain this clearance, which will be executed by Belgian Defense.
* Only applicants with a nationality of a country that is both part of NATO and the EU will be eligible.
* Working for the Patrimony requires living in Belgium for the duration of the employment.

The interviews will take place at the Royal Military Academy, Hobbemastraat 8, 1000 Brussels. If needed, online interviews can be organized. The date and time of the interview will be communicated to the preselected candidates.
CONTRACT
* Probable date of recruitment: From October 1st 2026, in consultation with the applicant.
* Status: Full-time employment (38 hours / week) based on an open-ended contract with the Patrimony of the Royal Military Academy (you will not be a civil servant).
* Wage scale: class A2 (PhD). RMA-Patrimony applies a merit-based research career track, allowing researchers to advance in wage scale based upon annual evaluations.
* Holiday pay.
