About the Green Finance Institute (GFI):
Established in 2019, the Green Finance Institute (GFI) is at the forefront of shaping how finance can be used to facilitate a real economy transition, by creating the enabling environments and financial solutions needed to accelerate the transition to a net-zero and nature positive economy.

Through its ‘Transactions to Transitions’ (T2T) approach, the GFI is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between committed capital and impactful solutions, delivering positive outcomes for climate and nature by redeploying capital at the pace and scale that the science demands. By working with governments, and partnering with financial institutions, corporates, NGOs, policymakers, academics and civil society experts, the GFI has mobilised £77bn in committed capital over six years.

GFI T2T rigorous deal-doing approach coupled with a focus on bankability is designed to scale from the outset, working on replicable models that can be applied across regions. No single organisation can address every part of the value chain. To accelerate impact across these and other projects, GFI coordinates experts in policy, development finance, structured finance and project development. This approach not only works to create deals, it helps create institutional approaches that can enable these deals to be replicated and scale across priority sectors and geographies.

What's the role?
This is an exciting role for an experienced financial transactions practitioner or electricity networks infrastructure market leader looking to drive the acceleration of electricity power grid modernisation in the EU, by applying their leadership and deal-making skills to mobilise investment into the EU power grids sector.

We are looking for a proactive, hands-on and engaged individual to bring leadership, drive and enthusiasm as well as technical and market expertise to bolster the efforts of a strong existing team to design, test and pilot innovative investment platforms for power grid infrastructure. You will lead a small team that works between policy makers and public and private market participants to coordinate the required action and collaboration on both sides and to help deliver the EU’s electrification goals through practical action and transactions.

Key activities will be:

Lead on establishing innovative financial structures to channel private investment into EU power grid infrastructure – performance objectives will be linked to investors’ commitments or transactions;

Deliver on investment products : The job will entail holding the pen on modelling and structuring investment products, drafting relevant blueprints, and engaging with senior expert stakeholders in workshop discussions to ensure uptake of these financial instruments.

Engage with regulators and policymakers to create enabling market conditions – supporting the development of an attractive infrastructure asset class for private investors, in support to EU power grids’ modernisation and expansion;

Multi-stakeholder engagement – working with the senior associate and GFI Brussels Director, coordinate operational working groups composed of investors, industry, policymakers and regulators in national, regional and pan-European forums focused on power generation and transmission projects.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience of working with public and private financial institutions as well as with policy makers and influencers. You must have a ‘deal making’ mentality – and strong interest in designing the right products required to increase private investments into EU clean energy infrastructure. You will have experience of working within a consultancy or a bank, private equity or infrastructure investor on project finance or in developing structured finance solutions.

An effective communicator with a delivery focus, you will have experience of managing and leveraging relationships with a wide range of cross-sectoral stakeholders. The ability to juggle and manage multiple priorities, set direction and lead with confidence will be critical to the role. You must have the ability to develop a rapid understanding of technical detail.

This is an exciting and result-driven role and presents the opportunity for you to lead and support an existing high performing team to deliver investment outcomes in the public interest. Further opportunity exists, in due course, to expand the remit and focus of this work into parallel sectors.

You need to have:

Significant experience in financial or advisory services, ideally a client-facing or structuring background in commercial bank or consultancy. We will also consider candidates with relevant experience in the energy infrastructure or adjacent sectors.

Highly experienced at client relationships with a proven track record in stakeholder management.

Excellent communicator, both written and verbal, with strong influencing skills.

Ability to deliver outcomes in the face of complex challenges which requires innovative thinking.

Skilled problem-solver with the ability to identify the best solution available.

Capable of switching between high-level strategic and granular detail.

Strong influencing, communication and collaboration skills.

A strong independent work ethic in addition to an ability to work as part of an agile and fast-moving team.

You will work very closely with, and report to the Brussels Director and small team of in-house collaborators and external consultants to design innovative investment products to channel private investments towards EU grids infrastructure. This role provides an opportunity to develop deep expertise in green and energy infrastructure finance and contribute to shaping policies that support the adoption of new financial products and services.

We'll trust you to:

Take ownership of and influence and support the delivery of the objectives of the programme which is to create investable products for to upgrade EU power grids.

Lead the project as an effective and skilled manager – providing tactical direction, proactively driving workarounds to barriers encountered to close actual transactions

Build and develop close and collegiate working relationships with public finance institutions and relevant government departments and regulators across the EU.

Get and stay across the detail of the required and emerging policy environment and become an expert on latest developments and how that affects market outlook.

Act as the key representative of the initiative; co-ordinating and chairing meetings and roundtables as well as leading on workshops.

Coordinate with the marketing and communications function on newsworthy announcements and events.

Represent the Institute at relevant industry events.

Other duties as they arise across the business.
