You hold a bachelor’s degree in Sinology or have acquired an equivalent level through experience. You have an excellent command of spoken and written Dutch and/or English and Chinese. You have a very good knowledge of Classical Chinese. You have experience working with ancient Chinese books. You possess broad knowledge of Chinese history and culture. You work efficiently, proactively, and in a results-oriented manner. You are a team player who communicates and collaborates well with colleagues, but you can also work independently when needed. You enjoy precise work, safeguard the quality of your output, and do not shy away from repetitive tasks. You have experience with the Alma library system or are willing to follow training to learn it. You have strong skills in MS Office applications and Google Sheets.The Digitization and Enrichment of Collections department ensures the findability and accessibility of our partners’ physical resources. It creates, manages, and enriches collection data through metadata cataloging, digitization, and imaging, and plays an expert role in these domains.As an expert cataloguer with a focus on Classical Chinese, you will work as a project staff member to process a specific collection and prepare it for full integration into the KU Leuven Libraries collection. This concerns a set of (mostly multi-volume) valuable Chinese works dating from before 1912, currently partially catalogued on index cards and partially uncatalogued. This collection must be described and made accessible according to contemporary standards. In addition to metadata cataloging, the role also includes physical tasks (such as assigning shelf numbers and relocating these books to the stacks in the University Library). Finally, the project will also address necessary preservation measures.You report to the Team Leader of Digitization and Enrichment of Collections department at Library Services. You will also work closely with the subject specialist China at Artes, the Team Leader of Physical Collection Management at Library Services, and the project team appointed to coordinate the various subprojects related to the East Asian Collections of KU Leuven Libraries.KU Leuven Library Services is a strategic partner in acquiring, managing, and providing access to physical, digital, and electronic resources. A longer duration at a correspondingly lower employment percentage is also possible. This temporary position is part of a project to process and integrate a specific collection of works written in Classical Chinese into the library collection.If you are immediately deployable for all tasks of this position, you will start at grade 5. Promising candidates who cannot yet take on all tasks or who need to follow a specific training program will start at grade 4.
