PostgreSQL Database Administrator / Backend Engineer
We are seeking an experienced PostgreSQL Database Administrator to support a large-scale biometric identification platform and contribute to the modernization of critical IT systems. The role combines database administration, backend development, and infrastructure automation within a secure and high-availability environment.
Role Overview
You will be responsible for designing, managing, securing, and optimizing PostgreSQL database environments while supporting backend application development and data integration initiatives. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will help build scalable, reliable, and secure database solutions that support mission-critical operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer, maintain, and optimize PostgreSQL databases.
- Perform backup, restore, monitoring, and performance tuning activities.
- Design database architectures and implement data synchronization mechanisms.
- Develop and maintain data integration solutions.
- Support software development projects through custom database solutions.
- Integrate Python backend applications with PostgreSQL databases.
- Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitLab.
- Develop database standards, procedures, and technical documentation.
- Ensure database security, availability, reliability, and scalability.
- Support the implementation and integration of additional database technologies when required.
- Contribute to monitoring and logging solutions using the Elastic Stack (optional).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience.
- Strong experience administering PostgreSQL databases in production environments.
- Experience with backend development using Python.
- Strong knowledge of data integration and database design principles.
- Experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines with GitLab.
- Solid understanding of Linux environments and system administration.
- Experience working with RESTful web services.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana).
- Knowledge of Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
- Experience with NoSQL databases, key-value stores, document databases, or vector databases.
- Experience with infrastructure automation and DevOps practices.
Languages
- Fluent French or Dutch.
- Passive knowledge of the second national language is required; bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.
- Good command of English.

Work Environment
- Full-time position (40 hours per week).
- Hybrid working model with a minimum of two days per week on-site in Brussels, depending on project requirements and team agreements.

Contract Duration
- Initial contract until December 2026 with the possibility of extension.
