Purpose
The scientist will join the Advanced Materials Characterization and Investigations (AMCI) team within Synthetics Therapeutic Development & Supply - Analytical Development. AMCI is a diverse team of scientists performing advanced analytical characterization of pharmaceutical products and leading global analytical investigations in Synthetics R&D and the commercial product portfolio of J&J Innovative Medicine.
Join our team as a Principal Scientist specializing in Particulate & Colloidal Systems.
In this role, you will have the exciting opportunity to characterize particulate systems covering both dry and wet systems spanning active ingredients, excipients, up to final dosage forms, enabling a holistic understanding of drug products. By studying key particle properties such as particle size, morphology, surface properties, etc., you will explore how they influence bulk behavior, including powder flow in solid dosage formulation and process development. In wet systems, activities span formulations from nanocrystalline suspensions to liposome-based systems, requiring extensive characterization to develop stable systems and meet target product profiles.
The position is based in Beerse, Belgium.
You Will Be Responsible For
* Design & conduct experiments to characterize particle properties in dry and wet systems, covering active ingredients, excipients, drug intermediates, and final drug products across the Synthetics portfolio.
* Collaborate closely with API and Drug Product teams to optimize product development, including API quality and formulation & manufacturing platforms.
* Evaluate analytical strategies to support project teams in CMC development.
* Drive innovation projects related to characterization techniques and workflows, including assessment of novel methods and modeling.
* Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, GMP, and safety standards.
Qualifications / Requirements
* PhD in Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, or related field.
* Expertise in particle sizing technologies (Laser diffraction, DLS), microscopy, and image analysis.
* Experience with surface analysis techniques (gas adsorption, surface energy) and porosity analysis.
* Understanding of how particle properties affect bulk behavior and processability, including powder flow and shear testing.
* Knowledge of colloidal systems and stabilization techniques (DLS, Zetapotential, Rheology).
* Familiarity with statistical methods such as PCA/PLS.
* Background in crystallization or pharmaceutical formulation is a plus.
* Strong project management and communication skills.
* Team player with the ability to work in a matrix environment.
* Scientific curiosity, proactive, creative, and quick learner.
* Open-minded with the ability to work globally as part of a team.
