Banking and Finance Lawyer – specialized in Hungarian law – based in Luxembourg European Investment Bank (EIB) is recruiting a Banking and Finance Lawyer – specialized in Hungarian law – based in Luxembourg. This position is based at our Luxembourg headquarters and requires regular office presence. We offer relocation support.
The role is a full‑time temporary position at grade 5, for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.
Purpose The Southern and Central Europe (SCE) Unit of the Central Europe Division is part of the Legal Department. As a Banking and Finance Lawyer you will provide legal advice on lending operations, primarily for the EIB projects in Hungary, with opportunities to advise on projects in other jurisdictions of the SCE Unit. Your day‑to‑day work will include standard loan agreements, structured finance research, and advising under the supervision of the Head of Unit on complex transactions.
Operating Network You will report to the Head of Unit and collaborate with other lawyers from the SCE Unit and the Legal Directorate, as well as partners from Operations, Projects, Portfolio Management, and Monitoring. You will also liaise with external counterparts such as legal counsels, borrowers and guarantors.
Accountabilities
Draft and negotiate legal documentation for financing operations and guarantees for projects in the jurisdictions where the SCE Unit operates, such as bilateral loans with banking, corporate and public‑sector counterparties, and related security documents.
Draft and negotiate structured finance transactions, including securitisations and risk‑sharing operations, with or without external legal counsel.
Offer legal advice on all matters related to the EIB’s lending operations, from structuring to post‑close tasks, including loan restructuring and other post‑signature responsibilities.
Manage contacts and negotiations with the Bank’s clients and their legal counsels.
Handle administrative formalities that have legal nature or implications.
Liaise with external counsels when necessary.
Support and share knowledge with less experienced colleagues on operations.
Proactively keep up to date with legal developments and contribute to legal research.
Build and maintain relationships within the Bank, its clients and external advisers.
Qualifications
University degree in law in Hungary, minimum a Bachelor, preferably a Master.
Professional legal qualification and/or experience in Hungarian law preferred.
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in banking or project financing, preferably with an international law firm or an in‑house department of a bank.
Expertise in drafting and negotiating finance documents in English.
Excellent knowledge of English and/or French; good command of the other. Good knowledge of Hungarian language is required.
Competencies All EIB employees are expected to achieve level 5 of the Inter‑Institutional language courses (B1.2 CEFR). The Bank offers training support. A good command of French is not a pre‑requisite unless explicitly required.
