Our Brussels office plays a strategic role in supporting international operations combining local market insight with the strength of a global network. The opportunity:
We have an exciting opening within our Life Reinsurance team in Brussels to support the global growth of our portfolio. This role will report directly to our Head of Underwriting & Global Product Head.

This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and collaborative environment where your expertise will help shape the future of our business.

Initial placement is in Brussels, with potential for future relocation to other QBE Re offices.

The applicant will support the Head of Underwriting & Global Product Head in managing and optimizing underwriting operations for life reinsurance products

* Strategy: Actively contribute to the definition and implementation of QBE Re Life strategy aligned with Global Specialty Re ambition. Review and modernize underwriting processes to increase the engagement and productivity of our people. Communicate with key stakeholders and closely monitor progress
* Business Development: Take the lead on strategic initiatives, including market exploration and innovative product development, leveraging Global QBE Re expertise and distribution channels to deliver profitable growth. Develop and maintain a strong reinsurance network and represent QBE Re in industry conferences.
* Underwriting Governance: Assist the Head of Underwriting in reviewing referrals, implement and follow-up best in class underwriting practices and consistency across the entire life operation. Take the lead on specific large and complex deals to support key client needs and guarantee alignment with QBE Re appetite.
* Portfolio Management: Monitor life portfolio leveraging analytical tools and dashboard. Collaborate with internal teams (reserving, capital modelling, portfolio optimization, finance, actuarial, audit) to ensure life reinsurance portfolio requirements are integrated and reflected in internal reporting.
* Gross to Net strategy: leverage retrocession market and other forms of risk transfer to integrate QBE Re Life portfolio into the Global Specialty Gross to Net strategy delivering the best outcomes for shareholders.

Your role:
Primary Responsibilities
- Ability to understand large and complex life deals and drive the end to end underwriting process.

-Travel and visiting both existing markets (in Latam and Europe) and potential new markets across the world.

-Build and maintain an international network of life reinsurance contacts and expertise.

-Contribute to the delivery of the annual business plan for the respective business unit by making appropriate decisions
-Apply the reinsurance strategy in order to safeguard the portfolio
-Participate in all relevant meetings in order to share and develop strategy, knowledge and best practice
-Promote QBE Re's brand and values in all professional interactions.
-Perform underwriting activities in accordance with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met
-Ensure compliance with underwriting standards, legal, and regulatory requirements.
-Ensure the recording and measurement of reinsurance risks, (including delegated underwriting authorities if relevant) to ensure accuracy and good practice
-Understand and comply with any retrocession requirements to minimize risk and to deliver business plan objectives
-Establish, strengthen and develop relationships with stakeholders including customers, brokers, business partners and colleagues to maximize influence and achieve business objectives
-Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of market dynamics and market cycle to enhance business performance
-Maintain expertise and team knowledge through identifying appropriate learning and development activities
-Underwrite reinsurance risks in accordance with the business plan and the delegated underwriting authority to meet business objectives including: | Negotiating rates terms and conditions for existing and new business | Compliance of production and issue of contract certainty documentation | Ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations and guidelines | Ensuring contribution to the business plan and objectives | Support credit control in payment collection
-Participate in the review and analysis of the portfolio to identify progress toward business objectives
-Ensure entries are properly and promptly recorded on EO systems to ensure accuracy of data in relation to: | Underwriting | Aggregate exposures
-Contribute to the aggregate management and peer review processes to encourage and develop excellence
-Motivate and coach team members to ensure the relevant knowledge and expertise is shared for their continuing personal and professional development


Preferred Competencies/Skills


* Deep expertise in Life reinsurance underwriting, with a strong business acumen and a minimum of 5 to 15 years of relevant experience.
* Willingness to travel internationally and very comfortable in client facing situations.
* Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation abilities. Minimum C1 level English proficiency; additional languages are an asset.
* Strong analytical background, ability to interpret actuarial studies, market trends, and portfolio dynamics. Actuarial qualification is a plus.
* Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills with clients, actuaries, claims, and client managers.
* Comfortable in audit and review environments; skilled at constructive feedback to key internal and external stakeholders.
* Familiarity with underwriting automation, rules engines, and digital underwriting maturity assessments.
* Leadership and coaching capability to support team development and ensure global underwriting consistency.
* Understanding of regulatory frameworks affecting treaty underwriting (e.g., Solvency II, data privacy, cross‑border rules).

Preferred Knowledge
•In-depth understanding of life reinsurance underwriting and market conditions.
•Proven knowledge of relevant market conditions for specific class/portfolio
•Intermediate level understanding of relevant software including Excel and other departmental software packages
•Good knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements
