The KU Leuven Centre for IT & IP Law (CiTiP) is a research unit of the Faculty of Law and Criminology with the mission to develop legal knowledge in the field of ICT, ethics, digital media and intellectual property. The Centre is affiliated to imec, and is part of the Flemish Knowledge Centre for Data & Society, DigiSoc, Leuven Centre on ICT (LICT) and Leuven.AI. CiTiP has over 30 years of experience conducting research into legal and ethical aspects of innovative information and communication technologies, privacy and security, intellectual property and biotechnology, in both the public and private sectors. CiTiP currently consists of over 70 researchers and fellows, apart from 6 professors, a research and a valorisation expert, 9 postdoctoral researchers, teaching assistants and administrative support. CiTiP is involved in interdisciplinary projects financed through programs such as Horizon Europe/H2020, Digital Europe, Marie Curie, FWO, ICON, Belgian and Flemish authorities, as well as through bilateral contracts. Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be hired on a full-time basis. The candidate will on the one hand collaborate with CiTiP's valorisation manager and research coordinator (50%) and on the other hand be involved in ongoing research projects on legal aspects related to AI/data (50%). The precise content of the duties/tasks will be determined in consultation with the successful candidate, but can relate to the elements explained below.
* Valorisation and Research Support (50%)
CiTiP is involved in many projects at different levels. This requires a continuous involvement in the ecosystems aiming at creating potential new collaborations for and within CiTiP.
* You will work closely with CiTiP's valorisation manager and research coordinator to support and advise CiTiP staff in preparing project proposals, while also actively monitoring calls and identifying potential opportunities
* You will contribute to the internationalisation and visibility of CiTiP both through your own initiatives and by supporting the efforts of CiTiP's staff members (e.g. joining international conferences/events, establishing international partnerships, etc.).
* You will help shaping the valorisation (societal and economic impact) of CiTiP's research, both by proactively exploring valorisation opportunities and by supporting initiatives undertaken by CiTiP researchers.
* You will help organising CiTiP activities (e.g. internal workshops, scientific conferences…).
* You may also be involved in the external communication of CiTiP by maintaining/ contributing to the website and social media.
* You help foster a dynamic, stimulating work environment that encourages collaborative research. In this role, you act as a point of contact for new members, early-career researchers, and voluntary scientific staff at CiTiP.
* Research on AI/data law (50%)
Although the main focus of the successful candidate will be to collaborate with CiTiP's valorisation manager and research coordinator, the candidate will also be involved as a legal researcher in projects focusing on legal aspects of data/AI governance (AI Act, GDPR, Data Governance Act, Data Act,...). This can include contributing to certain deliverables (e.g. mapping of frameworks or providing recommendations), attending project meeting or supporting other project members when needed. You will also be encouraged to publish research in high quality peer-reviewed national and international journals, present research results at national and international meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops.
Profile
* You have obtained a master's degree or PhD in law with a specialisation in ICT law.
* You have expertise on the evolutions in digital law (e.g. AI Act, Data Act, Data Governance Act), as well as on the interaction between technology and law.
* You have at least 3 years of experience in writing or supporting scientific research proposals, research management, and publishing research results.
* You have experience with business development and have excellent organisation/ management skills.
* You are familiar/have experience with regional, federal, European and international opportunities for research/valorisation funding.
* You are/have been involved in the AI/data ecosystem in Europe and beyond.
* You have an excellent command of English, which can be demonstrated e.g. via publications, white papers, proposals,…
* In-depth knowledge of Dutch is an added value (reading, writing, speaking).
* You have a strong interest in multi- and interdisciplinary research. You are familiar with legal analysis and/or other qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
* You have an analytical mind, creative thinking skills, and a passion for critical reflection.
* You can plan your work independently, prioritise where necessary, respect deadlines, and also work under time pressure with respect for colleagues and the ambition to deliver high quality.
