The Interim Head of Lab Operations is responsible for stabilising and optimising laboratory operations during a period of organisational transition and consolidation. The role focuses on ensuring continuity of daily laboratory activities while improving operational efficiency, workflow structure, and team effectiveness.
The position provides interim operational leadership to the laboratory organisation, analysing workflows, identifying operational bottlenecks, and implementing improvements to increase efficiency and turnaround times. The role also includes coaching laboratory team leads, strengthening team structures, and advising management on operational optimisation.
In addition, the role coordinates operational activities between laboratory teams and supporting functions, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives. A key component of the assignment is documenting processes and ensuring knowledge transfer to support long-term operational sustainability within the organisation.
Non-Negotiable Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
* Extensive experience in laboratory operations leadership (Head of Laboratory, Lab Operations Manager, or similar)
* Proven track record in operational optimisation and process improvement within laboratory environments
* Experience managing laboratory teams and team leads in regulated laboratory environments
* Strong understanding of laboratory workflows, sample flow management, and operational planning
* Experience working in regulated laboratory environments (e.g., ISO 17025, GMP, or similar)
* Demonstrated ability to stabilise operations during periods of organisational change or transition
* Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
Desirable Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
* Experience with laboratory consolidation, scale-up, or operational transformation projects
* Background in analytical laboratories, food testing, or environmental testing environments
* Experience implementing Lean, operational excellence, or continuous improvement methodologies
* Experience working as an interim manager or consultant in laboratory environments
* Experience documenting operational processes and managing knowledge transfer during organisational transitions
