Multi-scale image-based characterization of articular cartilage mechanics

We are looking for a highly motivated and collaborative early-career researcher with the following qualifications:
1. A PhD in biomedical engineering, biomechanics, biophysics, medical imaging, or a closely related field.
2. A solid background in MR imaging, medical image analysis, and experimental biomechanics
3. Hands-on experience with one or more of the following techniques is an asset: clinical or high-field MRI, PET-MRI, deformation microscopy, or finite element modeling.
4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively across disciplines such as engineering, biology, and clinical research.
5. A strong scientific track record, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and presentations at international conferences.
6. A creative and independent research attitude, with excellent problem-solving skills.
7. A team-oriented mindset and strong communication skills in English (written and spoken).
As a postdoctoral researcher in the OA-CONNECT project, you will:
8. Design, conduct, and analyze experiments to investigate cartilage behavior under mechanical loading.
9. Develop and implement advanced imaging workflows, including deformation microscopy, high-field and clinical MRI, and PET-MRI.
10. Contribute to the refinement and application of inverse finite element (FE) modeling for multiscale mechanical characterization of cartilage.
11. Integrate in vitro, in silico, and in vivo data into a coherent, multi-scale mechanobiological framework.
12. Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, biologists, and clinicians.
13. Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and scientific outreach.
14. Support and mentor graduate students, and help foster a collaborative and inclusive research environment.
Are you a motivated early-career researcher with a passion for biomechanics, medical imaging, or mechanobiology? Join us in the ERC-funded OA-CONNECT project (PÏ Prof. Ilse Jonkers), where we explore a fundamental question: why does mechanical loading—typically beneficial for cartilage and chondrocyte biology—turn harmful in osteoarthritis (OA)? Our interdisciplinary team investigates this question across multiple scales, from joint-level movement to molecular cell responses, using a combination of in vitro, in silico, and in vivo methods. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will focus on advancing dynamic multi-scale imaging techniques to characterize cartilage mechanics in real time. This includes: •Developing and applying deformation microscopy, high-field MRI, and clinical MRI to capture deformation fields and integrating inverse FE to characterize the mechanical properties. •Contributing to the development of PET-MRI protocols for simultaneous assessment of molecular responses under mechanical load These innovations will offer an unprecedented view into cartilage degeneration and its mechanobiological drivers—paving the way for non-invasive, personalized strategies in OA treatment.
