Client Background & Position Overview

Our client is a leading European research and development center specializing in silicon photonics and high-speed optical technologies. Based in Belgium, the organization drives cutting-edge innovation in photonic integrated circuits for next-generation telecom, AI, and data center applications. With a strong foundation in academic excellence and industrial impact, the center is at the forefront of advancing optoelectronic integration and bandwidth scaling for future communication systems.

As a Senior High-Speed Modulator Concept Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing high-performance photonic devices and integrated solutions.

Responsibilities

* Lead the design and evaluation of next-generation high-speed optical modulators, including Mach-Zehnder and micro-ring structures, targeting performance beyond 400G.
* Design RF transmission lines and integrate them with photonic components to ensure optimal performance across optical and electronic domains.
* Investigate and incorporate novel materials into existing fabrication platforms to push performance boundaries.
* Simulate, design, and validate optical components and systems in collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
* Interface with fabrication teams to refine or replace key process steps critical to high-speed modulator performance.
* Engage with test, module, and system teams to ensure end-to-end functionality and manufacturability of developed components.
* Define experimental test plans, conduct data analysis, and use feedback loops to guide continuous design iteration and improvement.

Requirements

* PhD in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with at least 3 years of experience
* OR Master’s degree with 6+ years of relevant industry experience
* Proven experience in the design, simulation, and testing of photonic components using silicon or III/V materials
* Demonstrated leadership in high-speed modulator development projects
* Proficiency with optical simulation tools (Lumerical, COMSOL, Photon Design)
* Familiarity with RF modeling tools (CST, HFSS, ADS), and process simulation tools (Sentaurus, Silvaco)
* Hands-on experience with layout software (Tanner L-Edit, Luceda IPKISS)
* RF component testing experience is a plus
* Programming in Python and working in Linux environments are considered assets
* Deep knowledge of integrated optics and silicon photonics fabrication flows
* Strong problem-solving abilities and innovative thinking
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
* Team-oriented, collaborative mindset within multidisciplinary and international teams.

This role provides a unique opportunity to drive next-generation photonics innovation in a high-impact research environment. If you are passionate about high-speed optical technology and enjoy working on the frontier of photonics and electronics, we invite you to join a dynamic and collaborative engineering team pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
