Position Overview
Alter-Learning is seeking a creative and detail-oriented
Sound Designer
to join our growing team. This role focuses on designing immersive, educational, and engaging audio experiences for our interactive learning games. The ideal candidate has experience in sound design for games or interactive media, a strong understanding of how audio supports learning and gameplay, and a passion for using sound to enhance educational outcomes for K-12 and STEAM-focused content.
The Sound Designer will collaborate closely with game developers, educators, and content creators to ensure that sound effects, ambient audio, and audio feedback align with both gameplay mechanics and pedagogical goals.
Responsibilities
Design, create, and implement sound effects, ambient soundscapes, and audio feedback for educational games and interactive learning content.
Collaborate with game developers, educators, and designers to integrate sound seamlessly into gameplay and learning mechanics.
Ensure audio elements reinforce educational objectives, user engagement, and accessibility standards.
Edit, mix, and optimize audio assets for performance across different platforms and devices.
Participate in playtesting sessions to evaluate the effectiveness of sound design on user experience and learning impact.
Iterate on audio assets based on feedback from internal teams and testing results.
Maintain organized audio libraries and documentation for ongoing and future projects.
Support other creative or production areas as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a collaborative mindset.
Required Qualifications
Proven experience as a Sound Designer, Audio Designer, or similar role in games, interactive media, or digital products.
Strong understanding of sound design principles, audio storytelling, and user feedback through sound.
Experience working with sound effects, ambient audio, and interactive audio systems.
Enjoyment of games, both development and playing, with a basic understanding of game mechanics and player experience.
Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including educators and developers.
Desired Skills
Proficiency with digital audio workstations (DAWs) and audio editing tools (e.g., Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Reaper, Logic Pro).
Experience implementing audio in game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine.
Knowledge of interactive and adaptive audio systems.
Strong attention to detail and ability to balance creativity with technical constraints.
Excellent communication skills and openness to feedback and iteration.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on educational games, serious games, or learning platforms.
Familiarity with STEAM education principles and age-appropriate audio design for K-12 learners.
Understanding of accessibility considerations in audio design (e.g., clarity, cognitive load, inclusive design).
Basic knowledge of game design principles related to audio and player feedback.
