The VIB Technologies program - https://vib.be/en/technologies#/ - constitutes the centralized scientific research infrastructure of the institute, supporting researchers not only within the institute but also beyond, by providing them with access to cutting-edge technologies for their life science research endeavors. VIB Technologies encompasses 12 state-of-the-art core facilities, each with a specific technology focus, plus a dedicated Tech Watch team and a Technology Training unit. Spanning across Leuven, Ghent, Brussels, and Antwerp, our facilities house a team of over 100 staff members.
The VIB Bioimaging Core plans to strengthen the team in Leuven with a motivated Microscopy Core Facility Technician. The VIB BioImaging Core supports both light and electron microscopy to answer complex biological questions - https://bioimagingcore-leuven.sites.vib.be/en. The staff is the heart of the facility, and the experts consult, train, and collaborate with users on experimental design, image acquisition, and image analysis. The focus of the responsibilities of the new Technician is to provide advanced light microscopy expertise to our user community. Profile
You possess at least a Master degree or a Ph.D. in Biomedical, Biological Sciences or related disciplines, or equivalent through experience
You have experience in a Life Science research environment for at least 4 years
You have wide experience in light microscopy, and confocal microscopy in particular, for at least 4 years
You are technology-minded and have a service mindset for supporting and enabling the best science by offering of expertise on technology
You are a team player with strong social, communication and didactic skills
You are well-organized, structured and able to autonomously plan and execute tasks, documenting and reporting work accurately
You are meticulous and self-motivated
You are eager to learn and adapt in a fast-evolving environment
Good English skills, both oral and written are a must
The following is an asset:
Experience in light sheet microscopy applications is sought after
Experience in image processing and analysis, particularly of light sheet datasets
Hands-on experience on general sample prep for light microscopy applications, and specifically in sample clearing protocols for volumetric imaging
Neuroscience background
Experience working in a microscopy core facility
Experience in following-up Life Science research projectsMain activities
Discuss experimental design, including sample preparation, acquisition and image analysis possibilities with users and colleagues
Define the most optimal imaging strategy for incoming research questions
Support scientist on advanced light microscopy applications, including widefield, confocal, high-content screening
Support light sheet imaging applications, by providing advice and guidance on sample preparation (including clearing), sample mounting and imaging, and on specific light sheet dataset analysis challenges
Ensure that the core’s instrumentation is benchmarked and working up to standards
Train users on the core’s instrument portfolio, and follow-up evolution of newly trained users
Take part in immediate support permanency in the core
Participate in teaching activities organized by the core (courses, workshops, seminars)
