The Director EH&S for the Geel MAKE site leads the Environmental Health & Safety function for a Synthetic Manufacturing platform. The role is responsible for overseeing all EHS activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing risk, and embedding a strong safety culture across the organization.
Responsibilities
Represent the EH&S function with internal stakeholders (engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, facilities) and external bodies to advance site objectives.
Develop and implement site EH&S strategies aligned with enterprise goals, budgets, and risk factors.
Lead the partnership with site leadership to define and implement a strategic EHS roadmap, addressing program gaps and ensuring compliance.
Manage the site EHS team: set objectives, conduct performance reviews, drive professional development, and contribute to succession planning.
Own design, deployment, and continuous improvement of EHS management systems, procedures, and best practices across controlled sites, and identify cross‑site efficiency opportunities.
Chair and facilitate site EHS committees and cross‑functional teams to ensure effective program implementation.
Lead hazard and risk‑management activities, implement change‑management processes, and streamline the EHS program for leaner delivery.
Maintain local ISO and other program certifications by aligning EHS systems with relevant standards and audit readiness.
Investigate incidents and near‑misses, drive root‑cause analysis, and ensure corrective actions are implemented and tracked.
Oversee CAPA governance, identify process improvements, and inform leadership of significant non‑conformities.
Execute the global audit program, lead participation in system and technical audits, and ensure closure of identified hazards.
Champion innovation and cultural change to strengthen safety culture and overall EHS effectiveness.
Own the site Emergency Response Plan, conduct scheduled drills, and serve as Incident Commander / Plant Emergency Officer during crises.
Deploy enterprise and platform initiatives at the site level and participate in strategic planning with senior leaders.
Monitor new legislation and emerging issues to ensure compliance in a cost‑competitive manner.
Develop and implement a site training strategy addressing regulatory and operational risks, including onboarding for new hires.
Manage EHS aspects of external manufacturers, suppliers, and contractor programs in collaboration with procurement and operations.
Qualifications
Minimum education: University or bachelor’s degree.
10–15 years of related experience.
8–10 years of people‑management experience.
Certified Preventionist per Belgian legal requirements.
Strong communicator, technical expertise, negotiation, cross‑cultural skills.
Fluent in Dutch and English (written and oral).
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Travel: less than 20% of the time; domestic and international.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree.
Experience with PSM (Process Safety Management).
Specialization in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or related EH&S disciplines.
Background in EH&S for pharmaceutical and chemistry sectors.
Experience with EH&S data and data‑management systems.
Ability to energize and inspire high‑performance teams.
