Overview
Responsible for the design, implementation, and alignment of security controls across the organization, with a focus on security engineering, architecture, and cross-domain integration.
Acts as a bridge between technical security tooling, operational needs, and strategic initiatives.
Summary of Responsibilities
Security engineering and tooling integration
Email security ownership (Mimecast, MDO, DMARC, phishing controls)
Vulnerability and exposure management (Qualys, Defender TVM, pentests)
Cloud and data security support (CSPM, DLP)
Network visibility and detection (e.g., Darktrace)
Security architecture alignment across domains
Contribution to strategic initiatives (e.g., SASE, LSAAF SAS)
Coordination with SOC, infrastructure teams, and vendors
Risk identification, tracking, and transparency
Important Positioning – What Defines the Right Profile
While the responsibilities above describe the scope of the role, they are not sufficient criteria to identify the right candidate.
What differentiates the right profile is the depth of technical foundation combined with broad cross-domain expertise, built over time and validated through both experience and certifications.
Key Differentiators:
Strong Technical Foundations
Early exposure to electronics and low-level programming
Deep understanding of how systems and networks work internally
Ability to go beyond tooling and understand root causes
Infrastructure Background
Bachelor in IT (System Administration)
Hands-on experience in infrastructure and networking
Not starting directly in “security-only” roles
Formal Cybersecurity Specialization
Specialized Bachelor in Cybersecurity
Structured and comprehensive view across security domains
Extensive Certifications (Critical Differentiator)
The profile is strongly reinforced by a broad and coherent certification path, demonstrating both depth and cross-domain coverage:
CiscoCisco CCNP (expired but still highly relevant as proof of networking depth)
CompTIA Certifications (Full Track)CompTIA Cloud Admin Professional
CompTIA Network Infrastructure Professional
CompTIA Secure Infrastructure Specialist
CompTIA Secure Infrastructure Expert
CompTIA Security Analytics Professional
CompTIA Network Vulnerability Assessment Professional
CompTIA Network Security Professional
These collectively demonstrate:Strong networking foundation
Solid infrastructure knowledge
Cloud and security expertise
Analytical and vulnerability management capabilities
Other CertificationsISC2 SSCP
IT Service ManagementITIL v4 Foundation
ITIL v5 Foundation
These add:Operational maturity
Understanding of processes, service management, and governance
Why This Matters
This role cannot be filled effectively by:
A narrowly specialized security profile
A candidate lacking foundational IT knowledge
Instead, it requires someone who can:Understand systems end-to-end
Bridge infrastructure, cloud, and security domains
Identify gaps between tools and processes
Translate technical reality into architectural decisions
“This role is often described through its responsibilities, but in practice the differentiator is not tool ownership or individual domains. It is the combination of deep technical foundations (electronics, low-level programming, infrastructure), formal cybersecurity specialization, and a broad set of advanced certifications — particularly across the full CompTIA security, infrastructure, and cloud tracks, combined with ITIL service management knowledge.”
