Scope of Role:
The Welding Supervisor / Manager is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient execution of all welding activities on the construction project, ensuring that weld quality, traceability, and documentation meet project specifications, codes, and GMP requirements.
The role provides day-to-day leadership of welding teams and acts as the key interface with Construction, QA/QC, and Client representatives for all welding-related matters.
Key Responsibilities of the Role:
* Ensure all welding is carried out strictly in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and applicable ASME / ISO codes.
* Verify that all welders are appropriately qualified and approved for the WPS they are executing.
* Allocate work to welders, manage daily work plans, and ensure productivity targets are achieved without compromising quality.
* Provide training and mentorship to welding personnel, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and skill development.
* Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
* Address and resolve any welding-related issues or conflicts that may arise during the project.
* Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop personnel.
* Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance the overall productivity of the welding and fabrication department.
* Welding Supervisor shall continually assess each qualified welder on both their productivity and weld quality for the one-week probationary period allocated to each welder.
Day to Day Operations
* Ensure that all safety protocols are followed, promote a safe working environment in the workshop and on-site.
* Supervise and coordinate the activities of welding personnel, ensuring adherence to project specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations.
* Communicate job expectations and performance requirements to welders.
* Provide training and mentorship to welding personnel, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and skill development.
* Assist welders with requirements of the respective Welder Qualification Coupons as per applicable ASME-ISO Standards.
* Ensure all welders are qualified to the Project approved Welding Procedure Specification.
* Ensure all Welders are competent to read and understand the welding requirements of each WPS they are qualified to weld. Ensure Qualified Welders Register is current & available for both for Client QC Review.
* Conduct Daily Toolbox Talks – Welding Quality, with welding crews, engage and promote ways of improving welding quality, Encourage Welding QC to participate, Team approach, positive discussions - Right First Time Every time. Zero Weld Repairs.
* Coordinate work schedules, assign tasks, and manage workload distribution to meet production targets and deadlines.
* Copies of Project approved Project Approved WPS Shall be visible at all welding stations.
* Assist in procurement and inventory management of welding materials and equipment.
* Requisition of welding Materials- Consumables, shielding gases, Welding Wire, Electrodes, FCAW etc... Coordinate with Stores to on arrival materials are cross checked to ensure all welding material(s) & welding consumables meet the requirements of Project approved Specifications & Approved Project Welding Procedure Specifications
* Ensure all Welding equipment -tools are in safe working order, schedule monthly maintenance programmes constant upkeep of all welding equipment, to ensure all associated welding equipment’s are in good working condition and calibrated as per manufacturers Recommendations - Update Testing and Equipment Calibration Register when necessary.
* Ensure all Welding Equipment has an in-date Calibration Certificate sticker visible on all welding plants.
Competencies
* Knowledge of welding codes/standards and inspection methods (e.g., ASME, ISO) and the ability to apply them on site.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to identify non-conformances, document findings, and support close-out actions.
* Understanding of weld traceability, QA/QC documentation, and material control (WPS/PQR, welder qualifications, weld maps, reports).
* Familiarity with NDT requirements and coordination (e.g., VT, PT/DPI, MT/MPI, RT, UT) and interpretation of results against acceptance criteria.
* Clear communication and stakeholder management with welders, supervision, QA/QC, and client reps to resolve issues and maintain schedule without compromising quality.
Essential Criteria Three plus years of welding inspection experience.
* Hold relevant Health & Safety requirements.
* Pharmaceutical experience.
* CSWIP 3.2 welding inspection qualification.
* Knowledge of different NDT types I.E XRAY / MPI / DPI / Borescoping.
* Ability to read and interpret, specifications, regulations, codes, and other material pertinent to the project.
* Good level of IT skills.
Desirable Criteria
* Previous experience on GMP / pharmaceutical, biotech, or data-centre projects with high-spec stainless steel pipework.
* Additional welding inspection or quality certification (e.g., CSWIP 3.1, AWS CWI) or equivalent demonstrable experience.
* Working knowledge of orbital welding and/or hygienic tube installation standards and practices.
* Experience reviewing / compiling welding dossiers (ITPs, weld logs, NDT reports, material certs) for client handover.
* Formal training in root-cause analysis and corrective actions (NCRs, CAPA) with a track record of driving right-first-time quality.
