The MPE carries out the tasks of medical physics in all services using X-rays for diagnostic purposes in collaboration with the other members of the medical physics team.
A definition of the missions of the experts in radiophysics (MPE) in radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and radiology is presented in the Royal Decree of 20/07/2001 and its modifications in the Royal Decree of 20/02/2020.
The MPE is part of the common radiophysics service of the CUSL, the St-Jean Hospital in Brussels and the St-Pierre Hospital in Ottignies. The MPE is hierarchically dependent on the medical radiophysics service but functionally dependent on the services in which he/she performs his/her activities within the H. uni network.
* He/she participates in writing the specifications for invitations to tender, in the technical analysis of tenders and in the choice of equipment used in his/her field.
* He/she is responsible for the acceptance, commissioning and post-maintenance quality control of the equipment.
* He/she actively participates in the development of new projects related to the optimisation of techniques.
* In the framework of R&D and education :
- He/she ensures that he/she develops and maintains his/her skills in his/her field of medical physics in order to keep his/her accreditation as required by the Royal Decree
- He/she participates in the teaching and training of the different members of the medical physics teams (physicists, doctors, nursing staff, ...).
- He/she supervises trainees
- He/she contributes to the analysis of events which have led or could have led to accidental or unintentional exposure. He/she collaborates, if necessary, in the development of corrective actions but also in proactive risk analysis.
- He/she participates in the development of procedures for each medical practice implemented in his/her field.
- He/she is involved in clinical audits.
ACTIVITIES related specifically to services using X-rays for diagnostic purposes in the 3 hospitals:
* He/she is responsible for the dosimetry of patients undergoing medical exposure, including physical measurements to assess the dose received by these persons.
* He/she contributes to the optimisation of radiation protection of patients.
* He/she is responsible for the technical validation of internal and external dose studies.
* He/she participates in the department's quality assurance projects.
* He/she actively collaborates, within a multidisciplinary team, in two documented optimisation projects per year and per department in which at least one CT scan or interventional radiology equipment is used.
* He/she is responsible for the annual conformity check of the radiology departments’ equipment and related departments using medical radiology equipment.
