MISSION
Drones and Loitering Munitions (LM) have become a critical weapon on the battlefield. Their danger has increased even more with fiber-optic payloads that make them unjammable whereas kinetic weapons can hardly react fast enough to acquire and shot them. High Power Microwaves (HPM) Emitters that are able to burn the electronic of drone in a wide area is one of the best solutions to neutralize this new threat.
As an ELM Engineer at Thales, you will study the different concepts and technologies of HPM generation. Working in autonomy, you will be responsible for the development, design and testing of different components of this weapon of the future. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team currently in building.
RESPONSABILITY
1. Establish and evaluate the design and performances of HPM effectors
2. Study the different components (energy storage, high voltage pulsed generators, forming lines, tubes, antennas, …) of an HPM generator
3. Build the bridge between Operation Concepts (CONOPs) and the technology
4. Manage and organize your research
5. Ensure the management and monitoring of subcontracted tasks (internally and externally)
6. Conduct testing and evaluation of the components that you design
7. Participate in technical reviews.
8. Perform detailed documentation to track project development and design process
9. Stay current with industry trends and technological advancements related to HPM or ELM applied in defense systems
10. Represent the Thales technical team in joint international projects on HPM or ELM topics
PROFILE
11. Master’s Degree in Engineering or PhD in Electronics, Physics or related field
12. Competence and experience in literature review and analysis but in staying application minded
13. Strong appetite for electromagnetism and electricity; power electronics is a plus
14. Strong project management and problem-solving skills
15. Experience in designing, developing, implementing, testing, and analyzing high-power radio frequency, electromagnetic or microwave systems is welcome
16. Competence and/or experience in high voltage (hundreds of kV), pulsed high voltage circuits (below 1 µs), high currents (thousands of A), transmission lines, pulse forming lines, electron physics and antennas is a plus.
17. Ability to work independently, self-motivated and taking initiatives
18. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
19. Practice of Python
20. English (spoken and written)
21. French (spoken and written) is a plus
