OverviewWe are seeking a Freelance Mechanical Engineer to support a mechanical upgrade and expansion project at an industrial production site in Ghent. This facility operates within a heavy industrial manufacturing environment, focusing on large-scale production processes and continuous operations.
The project involves the modernisation and optimisation of existing mechanical systems, as well as the installation of new production equipment to increase capacity and efficiency. You will play a key role in ensuring reliable and high-performance mechanical operations across the site.
Your RoleDesign and develop mechanical systems and modifications for existing production lines and new equipment installations.Support plant upgrades, including machinery, piping systems, rotating equipment, and structural components.Produce and review mechanical drawings, layouts, and technical specifications using AutoCAD and SolidWorks .Coordinate and oversee on-site installation activities with contractors and suppliers.Perform mechanical inspections, testing, and commissioning of upgraded and newly installed systems.Troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement solutions to improve reliability and performance.Collaborate with electrical, automation, and maintenance teams for system integration.Ensure compliance with safety regulations, industrial standards, and site procedures.Prepare technical documentation, reports, and as-built drawings.
Your Profile5+ years' experience in mechanical engineering within industrial manufacturing environments (e.g. chemicals, metals, energy, or heavy industry).Strong knowledge of rotating equipment, piping systems, and industrial machinery.Hands-on experience with installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting in operational plants.Proficient in AutoCAD and SolidWorks for mechanical design and documentation.Ability to read and develop mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and layouts.Experience working on brownfield or upgrade projects is highly desirable.Familiarity with European industrial standards and regulations.Fluent in English.Eligible to work as a freelance contractor in Belgium.Available for full-time on-site work in Ghent.
Bonus SkillsExperience with pumps, compressors, conveyors, or heavy processing equipment.Knowledge of maintenance and reliability engineering practices.Experience in shutdowns, turnarounds, or plant revamps.Familiarity with condition monitoring and asset performance improvement.Experience in high-throughput or continuous production environments.
