Role Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to join our team for large-scale construction projects based in The Netherlands. The EHS Manager will be responsible for ensuring high standards of health and safety on our projects, as well as implementing our company’s safety management system. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction, oil & gas or manufacturing safety and a thorough understanding of local, national & international Health and Safety legislation.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and implement a project-specific Construction Phase Health & Safety program.
* Develop, promote, and maintain a strong, proactive health & safety culture on the project.
* Ensure full compliance with all relevant local health and safety legislation, client requirements, and company standards during the project construction phase.
* Coordinate construction health and safety program elements addressing site access, security, project induction, first aid, welfare, and emergency preparedness.
* Establish a process of active health and safety monitoring through audits and inspections of site conditions and contractor activities.
* Monitor and report on health and safety performance and challenges using predefined leading and lagging health and safety key performance indicators to EHS Country Lead.
* Coordinate the development and implementation of health and safety programs and initiatives designed to continually improve performance.
* Support the Project’s Construction Director in the execution of health and safety-related statutory duties.
* Lead the investigation of incidents, ensuring root cause analysis is completed and corrective actions are implemented.
* Influence employee work practices through dialogue, relationship building, and behavioral safety coaching.
* Be the voice of EHS on site & liaise with project managers to ensure a safe working environment on site.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required
* Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, science, or equivalent.
* Technical OSH Certificates such as NEBOSH Health & Safety Management for Construction, NEBOSH International General Certificate, OSHA 30-Hour construction, or similar are mandatory.
* Recognized Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) is a plus.
* Familiarity with ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015. Lead auditor qualification is a plus.
* Deep understanding of EHS regulations and compliance standards (e.g., relevant EU/Dutch, ISO 45001:2018, and ISO 14001:2015).
* Basic Understanding of ISO 31001:2018.
* An advanced knowledge of construction health and safety principles with proven technical skills in occupational safety and health disciplines, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in construction projects.
* Experience and proven capabilities in implementing health and safety management systems in an operational environment.
* Experience in developing and implementing behavioral safety programs.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong influencing and negotiation skills.
* Ability to handle challenging situations while maintaining composure and a high level of performance and delivering exceptional results.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate and influence management and operator levels within a project organization.
* Proficient in the use of MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook.
* Good knowledge of English and preferably French and/or Dutch.
Additional Responsibilities:
* Ensure projects remain in safe and compliant condition at all times.
* Initiate and implement the company’s health and safety policy to prevent injury, ill health, damage, and wastage.
* Stay informed about statutory requirements affecting the company’s operations.
* Promote the company health and safety policy and ensure it is communicated to all project site employees.
* Conduct and record regular safety inspections for the construction site(s), providing feedback to Site Managers, Project Director, and Regional EHS Senior Manager.
* Ensure identified actions from previous reports are completed within the specified timescales.
* Reprimand any staff member failing to meet health and safety responsibilities.
* Support project managers in conducting accident investigations and compiling timely closeout reports.
* Ensure site operatives and sub-contractors receive appropriate inductions. • Display all statutory safety notices on appropriate noticeboards.
* Ensure permits to work are correctly completed and suitable for the tasks undertaken.
* Ensure COSHH related items are stored securely and do not pose environmental risks.
* Review risk and method statements to ensure they are appropriate for the tasks.
