The function
Barco is seeking a Senior Engineer Power Electronics for its Immersive eXperiences Business unit in Kortrijk.
If you’re eager to leverage your engineering skills to develop power electronics for cutting-edge video projection systems using Digital Light Processing (DLP) imagers and solid-state light sources (laser, phosphor, LED) that define industry standards, this role is an ideal fit for you.
You'll join an international team of enthusiastic developers from Belgium, China, and USA.
Key responsibilities
We are seeking a Senior Engineer Power Electronics to design and develop laser and LED drivers as well as power supply solutions for DLP projection systems. The role focuses on high-performance, efficient, and reliable power electronics for solid-state projection light sources, working closely with external suppliers and internal cross-functional teams.
In this role, you will:
1. Design, develop, and validate laser diode and LED driver circuits for projection light sources.
2. Develop power supply architecture suitable for 1- or 3-chip DLP projectors, including: AC-DC and DC-DC converters Constant-current sources for lasers and LEDs High-efficiency, low-noise power solutions
3. Define system-level power requirements, interfaces, and operating conditions for projection systems
4. Specify electrical, thermal, EMC, and safety requirements for off-the-shelf power supplies and drivers
5. Work closely with ‘external power supply and driver suppliers’ to: Define technical specifications Review designs and schematics Support prototype development, testing, and qualification
6. Perform simulation and analysis of power electronics (e.g., control loops, efficiency, thermal behavior)
7. Support system integration, including bring-up, debugging, and optimization in projector prototypes
8. Ensure compliance with relevant safety, EMC, and regulatory standards
9. Collaborate with other engineers (mechanical, thermal, firmware) as well with operations teams (procurement, logistics, manufacturing)
10. Support transition from development to manufacturing and production
11. Provide maintenance, support, and continuous improvement in power electronics for existing products
Profile
12. Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field
13. Minimum of 2 - 5 years of engineering experience in a design environment or equivalent.
14. Proven experience in power electronics design, particularly: Switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) Experience in designing constant-current drivers for high-power LEDs or laser diodes
15. Strong understanding of: DC-DC and AC-DC converter topologies Control methods and loop stability Efficiency optimization and thermal management
16. Hands-on experience with schematic design, PCB layout review, and debugging
17. Knowledge of relevant Power electronics simulation tools (e.g. LTspice, PLECS, PSIM)
18. Experience with digital control, microcontrollers and FPGA’s
19. Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or C# to support debugging
20. Experience with laboratory measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, power analyzers, electronic loads)
21. Familiarity with EMC/EMI mitigation, safety, and regulatory requirements as well as relevant standards (IEC, UL, CE, etc.)
22. Ability to define test setups and validation procedures
