Senior Software Engineer @ University of Liège: Large-scale Cytomine Developments
We are seeking a senior software engineer to work on applied European research projects involving the development of open-source web software tools that promote collaboration using AI in biomedical and clinical image-based research (digital pathology). Our team actively contributes to the Cytomine open-source platform (https://uliege.cytomine.org/).
Your responsibilities:
The candidate will refactor and optimize Cytomine's back-end modules for managing large-scale data (millions of images, annotations, ontologies, metadata) and enabling real-time, interactive AI application execution. The current technology stack includes Spring (Java), PostGIS, NoSQL search engines, REST APIs, Docker Compose, and Python. The candidate should proactively explore big data and object storage technologies (e.g., Nomad, Kubernetes, Solr, S3) to support large-scale operations.
You will join a team of approximately five computer scientists—including senior researchers, software engineers, and PhD students—focused on web software and AI development for image annotation, content-based image retrieval, multimodal analysis, and human-computer interaction. Our team is part of the Montefiore Institute (~150 members) at the University of Liège (https://www.uliege.be/), involved in regional and European projects such as EU BigPicture (https://bigpicture.eu/), Interreg DigiPathConnect, and Wallonia ARIAC (https://trail.ac/en/).
Requirements:
* Master's or PhD degree in computer science or related fields (big data, HPC, machine learning, data science, human-computer interaction, bioinformatics, etc.)
* At least 5 years of experience or strong knowledge of the listed software technologies, or a high enthusiasm and capacity to learn quickly
* Commitment to open source and open science principles
* Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively and transparently
* Familiarity with the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, and deployment; working knowledge of Linux, Git, and CI/CD pipelines
* Professional proficiency in English; knowledge of French is a plus
* Passionate, self-motivated, autonomous, and hands-on
Practicalities:
* 12 to 18 months temporary contract, with potential extension based on performance and start date
* Full-time, on-site or hybrid work arrangements (to be discussed)
* Start date as soon as possible, no later than June 2025
