About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Freelance Automation Engineer with strong knowledge of Siemens automation systems to support ongoing projects within a large-scale power generation facility. You will play a key role in ensuring stable plant operations, troubleshooting automation issues, supporting upgrades and optimising performance within a high-availability environment.
Responsibilities
* Perform automation engineering tasks across power plant systems (turbines, boilers, auxiliaries, high/low-voltage systems).
* Program, modify, test and optimise Siemens PLC/SCADA systems (e.g., S7-300/400/1500, WinCC, PCS7).
* Conduct troubleshooting and root-cause analysis on automation and instrumentation issues.
* Support preventive and corrective maintenance activities on automation equipment.
* Work with operators, maintenance teams and electrical departments to ensure safe and efficient operations.
* Prepare technical documentation, functional descriptions and commissioning reports.
* Assist in planned shutdowns, upgrades and system improvements.
Required Skills & Experience
* Minimum 5–10 years experience in industrial automation.
* Strong background working in power plants, energy production or heavy industry.
* Proven expertise with Siemens PCS7 and/or TIA Portal / Step 7.
* Experience with SCADA systems such as WinCC.
* Solid understanding of E&I, P&ID and control logic.
* Comfortable working in operational industrial environments (high-availability process).
* Strong communication skills; English required, Dutch/French a plus.
* Freelance availability with ability to travel onsite when required.
Nice-to-Have
* Experience with turbine control systems or DCS migration projects.
* Familiarity with safety systems (SIS) and IEC standards.
* Knowledge of power generation processes (steam cycle, GT/CCGT, biomass, WtE, CHP etc.).
