We're seeking a Senior UX Designer (Freelance) for a 13-month project in Brussels, working with our client in the public sector. This is your opportunity to shape the digital landscape for mission-critical applications used by thousands, and to set the standard for user experience across a complex, high-impact environment.

As a Senior UX Designer, you'll be the driving force behind intuitive, accessible, and consistent user experiences for both office and field users. Your work will directly reduce administrative friction, empower end-users, and ensure that technology serves people — not the other way around. The stakes are high: your designs will impact how teams operate, collaborate, and deliver value to the public every day.
What You'll Be Doing
* Lead UX design for over 40 applications, ensuring a seamless and consistent experience across platforms (desktop, tablet, mobile).
* Advise and support five agile development teams, collaborating closely with functional analysts and developers.
* Develop interactive mockups and prototypes for new features and enhancements using industry-standard tools.
* Guide the implementation of design systems (Material Design, GOV.UK, or custom) to unify look and feel across all products.
* Champion responsive and mobile-first design, ensuring accessibility and usability in all contexts.
* Support developers in translating mockups into production-ready HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
* Identify, document, and advocate for the use of generic components across multiple applications.
* Justify and communicate your design decisions with clarity and evidence.
* Ensure all designs meet web accessibility guidelines and best practices.
* Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within a rapidly growing UX team.
What We're Looking For
* Minimum 8 years of demonstrable experience as a UX Designer, with a strong portfolio of responsive, content-driven, and interactive designs.
* Expertise in design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Invision, Figma, and UXPin.
* Proven experience with design systems (Material Design, GOV.UK, or custom-built).
* Advanced skills in HTML, CSS, SASS, and JavaScript for implementing and supporting design handoff.
* Experience creating interactive mockups and prototypes for complex applications.
* Deep understanding of responsive and mobile-first design principles.
* Strong knowledge of web accessibility guidelines and best practices.
* Experience with Angular and building web components is highly valued.
* Experience designing for public sector or government applications is a plus.
* Fluent Dutch at European CEFR level C2 is required.
* Ownership mindset: you take initiative, drive outcomes, and thrive in collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.
* Ability to justify design decisions and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Language Proficiency
* Dutch at European CEFR level C2 (mandatory).
