POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Production Stage Manager is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all operational, artistic, technical, and administrative aspects of large-scale live productions from creation and training through performance and ongoing operations. This role consolidates and elevates the responsibilities of Production Stage Management, Show Calling, and Production Coordination into a single Senior Director-level position. The Senior Director of Operations ensures seamless integration between creative vision, technical execution, safety, logistics, and people management across multinational and multicultural environments.

Reports to: COO

Direct Reports: Production Stage Management Team

Indirect Reports: Show Callers, Backstage Managers, Production Coordinators, Production

Assistants, and relevant operational staff.



CORE RESPONSIBILITIES


ARTISTIC & SHOW OPERATIONS LEADERSHIP

• On a project-by-project basis, the Senior Production Stage Manager, together with the Production Stage Management team, when applicable, serves as the primary operational link between the Artistic Director, Technical Director, Production Director, and Production leadership.

• Drives the operational execution of the creative vision while balancing operational, safety, and corporate requirements.

• Oversee and personally ensure the integrity, consistency, and quality of performances throughout the run.

• Deliver and maintain the final cue script and ensure proper training of operational stage management and show-calling teams.

• Act as or oversee the primary show caller, executing lighting, sound, automation, and scenic cues.

• Develop alternate show versions to address contingencies such as performer injury, illness, or technical failure.

• Oversee performer replacements and daily cast assignments in collaboration with Artistic leadership.


PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGEMENT & SCHEDULING

• Establish, manage, and oversee comprehensive training, rehearsal, creation, and performance schedules.

• Develop, implement, and maintain advanced call sheet systems integrated with payroll, reporting, and attendance.

• Manage daily rehearsal, training, technical, and performance schedules across multiple facilities and venues.

• Coordinate costume fittings, makeup sessions, technical rehearsals, dry techs, and special events.

• Support the Creative Producer with the assembly and maintenance of the Show Bible, including all artistic and technical documentation.

• Support ensure accurate preparation and distribution of performance reports, staging reports, and training reports.


TECHNICAL & SAFETY OVERSIGHT

• Collaborate with Technical Operations and Production Technical Directors to define equipment, crew, and system needs.

• Participate in automation, rigging, fountain, lift, and special effects pre-programming.

• Monitor theatre-specific risks, equipment movement, and operational constraints, advising

leadership accordingly.

• Develop, rehearse, and enforce safety plans, rescue procedures, and show-stop protocols.

• Conduct safety briefings, drills, and emergency simulations.

• Ensure compliance with all safety standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements.

• Work closely with Health Services regarding performer injuries, medical status, and risk mitigation.


TEAM LEADERSHIP & PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

• Lead, mentor, and evaluate Stage Management, Production Coordination, and Operations teams.

• Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of production and operational stage management and production staff.

• Foster a professional, collaborative, and high-performance work environment.

• Supervise time and attendance for performers and operations staff; submit payroll summaries.

• Provide factual input for performer disciplinary processes when required.

• Maintain morale, support team well-being, and organize team-building or social initiatives when appropriate.


COMMUNICATION, DOCUMENTATION & REPORTING

• Prepare, oversee, and distribute call sheets, stage plots, cue scripts, and operational documentation.

• Ensure accurate filing, archiving, and information accessibility.

• Oversee video recording, archiving, and distribution of rehearsals and creation sessions.

• Contribute to and oversee production newsletters, handbooks, and internal communications.

• Represent Operations leadership in management, HOD, scheduling, and performance meetings.

• Support marketing, promotional activities, media events, and photo shoots involving

performers.



QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION

• Bachelor’s degree (Theatre, Production Management, Operations, or related field preferred).


EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in stage management and/or production operations for large-scale, location-based live productions with high degrees of technical intensity and human flight systems.

• Minimum of three (3) years in a senior leadership role such as Production Stage Manager, General Stage Manager, or equivalent.

• Proven experience in multinational, multicultural production environments.

• Demonstrated experience across creation, rehearsal, training, opening, and long-term operations.


TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

• Advanced knowledge of stage management, show calling, cueing systems, and rehearsal processes.

• Strong understanding of automation, rigging, fluid effects, and complex technical systems.

• Proven ability to supervise, discipline, and lead artistic and technical personnel.

• Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

• High proficiency with PC-based systems and Microsoft Office.

• Ability to work under pressure, adapt to rapid change, and manage extended schedules.


SAFETY & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability and willingness to maintain CPR / First Responder certification.

• Ability to swim with a high level of comfort; ability to obtain SCUBA certification if required.

• Willingness to participate in safety drills, rescue procedures, and emergency response

planning.

• Commitment to defining, practicing, and enforcing safe working procedures.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

• Fluency in English required.

• Additional languages (French or others) considered a strong asset.
