Job description
The research engineer contributes to the development of smart manufacturing environments through their expertise in Industrial IoT, software architecture, and system integration. Within an interdisciplinary team, the focus is on capturing and documenting digitalization requirements, designing software and system architectures, implementing proof-of-concepts, and exploring new digitalization technologies and methodologies for the manufacturing industry in collaboration with industrial partners.
Specifically, the research engineer will:
Key tasks
Develop software prototypes that demonstrate the feasibility and added value of digitalization in an industrial context, using modern IoT technologies (edge/cloud integrations, messaging protocols such as MQTT/OPC-UA, and data analysis);
Investigate new methods and architectures to connect production systems, operator support systems, robots, and mobile platforms to AI algorithms via cloud or edge solutions;
Connect industrial IT platforms (MES, ERP, LIMS, PLM, MOM, etc.) and, where necessary, expand them with in-house developed modules;
Design, build, and functionally test the complete software and system architecture on internal and external infrastructure;
Define new project proposals and work packages in interaction with industrial partners and actively contribute to the valorization of research results
Possesses demonstrable technical knowledge and experience in developing industrial IoT solutions
Profile / Requirements :
Profile
A Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering (Computer Science, Mechatronics, etc.);
At least 4 years of relevant experience in an industrial or academic context (e.g., PhD);
In-depth knowledge of programming languages such as C#, Python, Java, JavaScript, etc.
Knowledge of and experience with both relational and non-relational databases (such as SQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, InfluxDB, etc.)
Proficient in setting up and using industrial communication protocols such as OPC-UA, MQTT,
Proficient for data exchange in Industrial IoT environments;
Experience with cloud computing platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure, and familiarity with virtualization technologies such as VMWare ESX and/or Docker;
Experience in setting up ETL data pipelines and data ingestion workflows for data collection, transformation, and integration;
