Overview
A leading organisation operating in a complex, security-sensitive environment is seeking a Principal Solution Engineer to lead solution architecture, requirements management, and systems development activities across large-scale initiatives.
This role will suit an experienced technical leader with a strong background in architecture governance, requirements engineering, and deployable communications/network systems, capable of engaging senior stakeholders and driving delivery across the full lifecycle.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
* Lead the design and development of end-to-end solution architectures aligned to business and operational needs.
* Define and uphold architectural principles, standards, and best practices.
* Manage architectural trade-offs across functionality, performance, security, and operational constraints.
* Ensure architectural alignment and consistency across multiple projects and programmes.
* Present architectural decisions, risks, and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
* Maintain a stable, scalable, and compliance-aligned architecture baseline.
2) Requirements Definition & Management
* Lead scoping, elicitation, analysis, prioritisation, validation, and sign-off of requirements.
* Apply and tailor appropriate requirements engineering methodologies, tools, and techniques.
* Establish and maintain requirements baselines and end-to-end traceability.
* Engage a broad stakeholder community to gather, validate, and agree requirements.
* Manage changing requirements, conflicts, and competing priorities.
* Contribute to the improvement of organisational standards and best practice in requirements management.
3) Systems Development Management
* Define and enforce policies and governance aligned to recognised systems development standards.
* Embed security and privacy principles across all stages of the development lifecycle.
* Plan and manage resources across the full lifecycle (design through deployment/support).
* Ensure delivery against technical, commercial, and quality objectives.
4) Network Design
* Design, produce, and approve network architectures, topologies, and configurations.
* Define network parameters including capacity, performance, connectivity, and security.
* Assess risks and define resilience, recovery, and contingency strategies.
* Produce multiple architectural views covering both functional and non-functional requirements.
Essential Education, Experience & Training
Education (one of the following)
Experience
* Proven experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams.
* Strong knowledge of mobile and deployable communications infrastructure.
* AC power distribution
* Emergency power generation
* UPS systems and supporting infrastructure
* Solid understanding of wireless technologies, including SATCOM.
* Experience with modelling languages (e.g., UML, SysML, ArchiMate) within recognised frameworks (e.g., TOGAF, NAF, DoDAF, Zachman).
* Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
* Demonstrated application of quality assurance practices.
* Hands-on experience across the full lifecycle of communications systems (development, deployment, testing, maintenance).
Certifications
* ITIL Foundation
* PRINCE2 Foundation (or equivalent, e.g., PMP)
Experience
* Experience with NAF v4
* Knowledge of Federated Mission Networking (FMN)
* Experience working in international, civil-military environments
* Understanding of relevant international organisational structures (e.g., ACO, ACT)
Certifications
* TOGAF / ArchiMate (or equivalent)
